Herman Christian

Herman Algene "Gene" Christian, 78, of Lake Charles died at 5:10 AM on Friday, October 10, 2014 in his residence. Mr. Christian was born on July 17, 1936 in Elton, LA. He was a graduate of Elton High School and received his pharmacy degree from the University of Houston. Mr. Christian was a pharmacist for 52 years. He owned and operated a pharmacy in Eunice and worked as a hospital pharmacist in Mamou and Jennings. He served as Director of Pharmacy at W.O. Moss Regional Hospital for 27 years. One of his first loves was the agricultural industry. He was privileged to operate the family farm in the Elton area. Farming interests included cattle, rice, soybeans and wheat. He was owner of Agricultural Implement Company in Eunice, selling case farming equipment. He was always very involved and active with his church families. He was an ordained Deacon in the First Baptist Church of Elton, LA and served in the First Baptist Church of Eunice, LA. Locally he was a devoted member of Trinity Baptist Church where he served many years on the Kitchen Committee, was the secretary for the Awana's, participated in the Vacation Bible School, and taught Sunday School. Mr. Christian participated in mission trips to Honduras and Columbia. While in Eunice he served on the Board of Directors of Acadia Baptist Academy. Mr. Christian was named outstanding Baptist Layman for Louisiana Baptist Convention in Association with ministry to Acadia Baptist Academy. Those left to cherish his memory are his loving wife of 48 years, Gennell Salter Christian (married December 27, 1966); the joy of his life was his daughter, Tonya Leigh St. Dizier; and his heart was filled with joy and love for his two grandchildren, Steven Christian St. Dizier and Josephine Leigh St. Dizier all of Lake Charles. He also leaves behind a sister, Kathlene Christian Goebel of Elton, LA. He was preceded in death by his parents, Herbert George and Ruth Pennington Christian. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 PM on Monday, October 13, 2014 in the Johnson Funeral Home Chapel. Pastor Steve James will officiate. Burial will follow in Greenwood Cemetery in Jennings, LA. Visitation will begin on Sunday from 2:00 PM until 4:00 PM and will continue on Monday from 12:00 noon until the start of the service.
