Ida Wright Poe, 78, passed away Saturday July 5, 2014 at a local hospital with her family at her side. Ida was born in the Calcasieu Community of Rapids Parish on March 21, 1936 to Hosea Eugene and Ruby Barton Wright. She graduated valedictorian of Oak Hill High School Class of 1954 and was a Magna Cum Laude graduate of McNeese State University and later completed two Master's degrees + 30 at MSU. She was a long time member of Twelfth St. Baptist Church and currently a member of Lake City Baptist Church in Lake Charles. Ida taught school for the Calcasieu Parish School Board as an Early Childhood Assessment Teacher working with special needs children. Her life was a life of service to others and to serving God, her husband and children, family, church and community. She was active in community service working with the Boy Scouts, Camp Fire, and March of Dimes. She was a leader in her church, where she taught Sunday School and served as a leader in G.A.'s, VBS and WMU, as well as implementing a children's church program. Ida is preceded in death by her parents and husband, Joe D. Poe. She is survived by her two daughters, Vicki P. Thompson, Tulsa, Oklahoma, and Regina "Dena" Oliver, Nederland, Texas; two sons, Robert E. "Gene" Poe and wife Maureen, Lake Charles and Edward Gary Poe and wife Tammy of Moss Bluff, six grandchildren, Scott Moore, Thomas Oliver, Marianna P. Thompson and husband Jordon, and Caleb, Adrianne and Derek Poe; four great grandchildren; three sisters, Audie Mullens, Houston, TX; Louise Quigley and husband Lee, Conroe, TX; and Patsy Bass and husband Freddie, Calcasieu; one brother, Harles Wright, Calcasieu and a host of nieces, nephews and extended family. Visitation will be at Johnson Funeral Home on Tuesday July 8, 2014 from 5:00 PM to 8:00 PM with a Prayer and Scripture service to be at 6:30 PM. Visitation will continue on Wednesday July 9 at Peniel Baptist Church, 55 Peniel Loop, Calcasieu, LA from 9:30 AM until 10:30 AM. Funeral Services will be at 10:30 AM Wednesday at the Church. The Rev. Ronnie Estes will officiate. Burial will follow services in Peniel Baptist Church Cemetery. The family requests that donations be made in her memory to Gideon Bible Society or to the charity of the donor's choice.
