September 9, 1934 — September 24, 2017

Idwo Walton “Steve” Stevens, 83, of Lake Charles, LA, died at 6:05 AM on Sunday, September 24, 2017 in a local hospital.

Mr. Stevens was born September 9, 1934 in Phoenix City, AL. With his father being in the military, he lived in several places before they settled in Lafayette, LA, where he spent most of his school years.  He served his country for twenty years after enlisting in the U.S. Air Force and being part of the Strategic Air Command during the Cold War era and served in Vietnam.  While he was stationed at Chennault Air Force Base, he met and married the love of his life, Eleanor, and they were able to travel the world following his military career.  After his retirement in 1972, he moved to Lake Charles, LA and began a second career with the Calcasieu Parish School Board, where he worked for over twenty years, retiring in 1997.  He was a member of Our Lady Queen of Heaven Catholic Church.  Steve was known as the ‘Puzzle Man’ at Villa Maria Retirement Center the past few years and took great pride in putting them together.

Mr. Stevens is survived by his son, Michael Stevens and wife Sandy of Bell City, LA; daughter, Elizabeth Stevens Ferguson and husband Jimmie of Lake Charles; and grandchild, Sydney Stevens.

He was preceded in death by his wife of fifty-seven years, Eleanor Ruth Stevens; and parents, Idwo and Shirley Stevens.

His funeral service will be held at 10:00 AM on Wednesday, September 27, 2017 at Our Lady Queen of Heaven Catholic Church.  Monsignor Daniel Torres will officiate.  Burial will follow in Consolata Cemetery.  Visitation will be at Johnson Funeral Home on Tuesday from 3:00 PM to 9:00 PM with a rosary at 6:00 PM and continue on Wednesday from 8:00 AM to 9:40 AM at the funeral home.

The family would like to express a special word of thanks to the staff of Villa Maria for the wonderful experience they offered their father.
