James Edward Newman

James “Jimmy” Newman passed away surrounded by his loving family in a local Lake Charles hospital on October 20, 2020 at the age of 70.

Jimmy is survived by his wife, Gloria, of 48 years; son, Marcus Newman (Jennifer); daughter, Carrie Addison (Eric); brother, Dennis Newman (Lynn); and grandchildren, Brianna and Katelynn Newman and Isaac and Phoebe Lea Addison all of Lake Charles.

He is preceded in death by his parents, L.C. and Jo Evelyn Newman of Marthaville, LA and brothers, George Charles Newman and Harry Newman.

Jimmy was born on September 18^, 1950 in Pineville, LA to L.C. and Jo Evelyn Newman.  He graduated from LaGrange High School in 1968 and proceeded on to graduate from McNeese State University in 1973 where he earned his bachelor’s degree in the science of education.  He went on to earn his master’s degree in education in 1980 and furthered his career by earning his education specialist degree from McNeese State University in 1972.  He began his extensive teaching career in 1973 at Mossville Middle School.  He became the Assistant Principal at College Oaks Elementary and Our Lady Queen of Heaven.  He moved to teach science at Our Lady School in Sulphur before retiring in 2018.  His students remember him as a fun, inspiring, and memorable educator.

He was a fun-loving husband, father, and Poppy who loved his family and was passionate about his sports teams, especially his New Orleans Saints, Houston Astros, and LSU Tigers.  He was an active and dedicated member of Our Lady of Good Counsel Catholic Church.

A funeral service will be held at 10:00 AM on Monday at St. Martin de Porres Catholic Church.  The Rev. Paul Jussen will officiate.  Burial will follow in Consolata Cemetery under the direction of Johnson Funeral Home.  Visitation will be held at University Baptist Church on Sunday from 5:00 PM until 8:00 PM with a rosary being recited at 6:00 PM.  Visitation will resume on Monday at St. Martin de Porres from 9:00 AM until the start of the service.
