James Madison Verret

James Madison Verret, a devoted family man and avid outdoor enthusiast, died on the morning of March 24th, 2011. James was at his home, surrounded by family and friends, when he ended his long struggle with brain cancer and was forever freed from the restraints of his physical being. He was 32 years old.

James was born in Lafayette, LA, and he grew up with his parents and two younger brothers in Lake Charles, LA. He later married his high school sweetheart, Leah, and they had two beautiful children. James took great pleasure in experiencing his kids' milestones, and he shared his love of simple pleasures with them. His interest in outdoor activities was evident from a young age, and he took advantage of any opportunity to go fishing and hunting with his beloved family and friends. James' love of nature was instrumental in his decision to pursue a degree in environmental science and a career in geology.

Despite overwhelming odds, James fought a valiant fight, and he and his family refused to give up hope. He did not allow his diagnosis to keep him from enjoying his last several years, and with the help of numerous family members, friends, and outstanding health care professionals, he was able to experience life as fully as possible.

He leaves to honor his memory, his loving wife of ten years, Leah Campbell Verret of Lake Charles; two children, Jackson Thomas Verret and Madison Olivia Verret, of Lake Charles; father, Merlin Verret and wife Kelly of Austin, TX; mother, Kathleen Rigler of Lake Charles; two brothers, Jonathon Verret and Benjamin Verret and fiance' Jodi Barras; nieces and nephews, Ian and Mila Alcantara and Aurora Verret; paternal grandparents, Merlin and Betty Verret of Lake Charles; maternal grandparents, Donald and Mary Rigler of Natchitoches, LA; close family friend, Sandy Gobert and his best friend, Wilson Kibodeaux.

He was preceded in death by his maternal grandfather, Billy Caldwell; aunt, Cindy Verret Porter and cousin, Jeremy Williams.

Funeral services will be at 2:00 PM Saturday, in First United Methodist Church of Lake Charles. Reverend Weldon Bares will officiate. Visitation Friday will be from 5:00 PM until 9:00 PM in Johnson Funeral Home. Visitation Saturday will be from 12:00 PM until the time of service in the church.
