James Milton Stewart, 93, of Lake Charles, LA, died at 9:43 PM on Tuesday, December 1, 2015 in a local hospital.
Mr. Stewart was born July 3, 1922 in Crowley, LA, where he was a 1939 graduate of Crowley High School. He served his country in the U.S. Army during the World War II in the Pacific Theater. He lived in Crowley until moving to Lake Charles in 1954, where he has lived in the same house that he and his wife built together. Mr. Stewart retired from Conoco Refinery after twenty-seven years of service. He was a member of University United Methodist Church, where he served as an usher for many years. He was a proud supporter of the McNeese Cowboy Club and was a longtime season ticket holder for both football and basketball. Mr. Stewart was an avid gardener, who took pride in his satsumas. He also enjoyed shrimping and fishing and will always be remembered for his sense of humor. His true passion in life was for his family.
Mr. Stewart is survived by his children, James B. “Jim” Stewart and wife Linda of Lake Charles, John “Barney” Stewart and wife Bernardine “Deanie” of Rayne, LA, Joan Brenda Nixon and husband Ted of Lake Charles, and Thomas Wayne Stewart of Sulphur; thirteen grandchildren; thirty-one great-grandchildren, with one on-the-way; nieces, Candy Zube and Paula Podrill; cousins, Dale and Mary Anne Stewart and William Wade “Butch” Stewart; and close relative, Rita Stutes.
He was preceded in death by his wife of seventy years, Julia Freida Stewart; parents, Bertha and Otis Stewart; brother, Joseph Bennett Stewart; and grandson, Paul Trevor Stewart.
His funeral service will be held at 2:00 PM on Saturday, December 5, 2015 at the Johnson Funeral Home Chapel. Reverend Katie Simpson will officiate. Burial will follow in Consolata Cemetery. Visitation will be at the funeral home on Friday from 5:00 PM to 8:00 PM with a scripture service at 6:00 PM. Visitation will continue on Saturday from 10:00 AM until the start of the service.
