James N. Netherland

June 19, 1933 — March 18, 2022

James Nathaniel Netherland, 88, passed away on March 18, 2022 in his residence.

He was born on June 19, 1933 in Manifest, LA to Benson and Minnie Brooks Netherland.

He served his country honorably in the U.S. Army, attending basic training at Fort Polk and serving in the Fifth Cavalry Regiment in the Korean War. He later worked as a Foreman for the Austin Bridge Company and enjoyed a career with Conoco before retiring and purchasing East Town Liquor in Lake Charles. James enjoyed grilling at his Longville home and watching the squirrels while sitting on his porch drinking coffee. He was a member of the Freemasons, where, in 1986, he served as Master of John C. Ayers Lodge 437.

He is survived by his loving wife of 28 years, Helen Friday Netherland of Longville, LA; daughter, Kelly Netherland and Matt Caballos of Iowa, LA; stepdaughter, Karen Kober and her daughter, Kalelyn Kober of Seabrook, TX; daughter, Theresa and Leonard Manuel of Carlyss, LA; sons, Terry Netherland of Lake Charles, LA, Warren Netherland of Jennings, LA, and Marvin Netherland of Lafayette, LA; as well as 9 grandchildren, 23 great grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by a son; his parents; 7 sisters; and 5 brothers.

A private family gathering will be held prior to interment at The Southwest Louisiana Veterans Cemetery in Jennings, LA. Interment services and burial at the cemetery will be held on Wednesday, March 23, 2022 at 12:30 p.m. Rev. Don DuPlechian and Terry Kirl will officiate.

The family would like to thank the nurses and staff of Brighton Bridge Hospice, the nurses and staff of the Office of Veterans Affairs, Tina Adams with Companion Care, and Johnson Funeral Home for their compassion and care. The family would also like to thank the Honor Guard from Fort Polk for rendering military honors for Mr. Netherland.
