James "Ray" Cannon, Sr.

August 19, 1941 — April 4, 2022

James Ray Cannon, Sr., 80, of Lake Charles, LA, passed away at 2:45 AM on Monday, April 4, 2022 in a local care facility.

Mr. Cannon was born August 19, 1941 in Lake Charles, LA, where he lived all of his life. During his younger years, he played football and ran track for Lake Charles High School. Ray began his career at Firestone as a carpenter and later worked as a project manager at the Hackberry Oil Reserve and Isle of Capri Casino, where he retired six years ago. He was a member of Our Lady of Good Counsel Catholic Church. He enjoyed working in his yard, cooking and barbequing for his family and was a devoted husband, father and grandfather, who’s sarcasm and wit will live on in his family.

Mr. Cannon is survived by his daughter, Sherry Leigh Buggs and husband Frankie of Baytown, TX; son, James Cannon, Jr. and wife Megan of Lake Charles; brother, Howard Louis Cannon and wife Sylvia of Moss Bluff; grandchildren, Brandon Speer and wife Ashley, Amanda Barrett and husband Cedric, Scott Hawkins and wife Brittany, Adrian Buggs, Josh Broussard and wife Morgan, Sean Hawkins, Abby Buggs and fiancé Johnny Garcia, and Liam Cannon; nine great-grandchildren; and many extended family members and close friends.

He was preceded in death by his wife of fifty-seven years, Gloria LeGros Cannon; daughter, Angela Lynn Cannon; parents, Howard and Estelle Cannon; and brother, Ronnie Cannon.

His funeral service will be held at 10:00 AM on Monday, April 11, 2022 at University Baptist Church. Father Paul Jussen will officiate. Burial will follow in Consolata Cemetery, under the direction of Johnson Funeral Home. Visitation will be at the church on Sunday from 5:00 PM to 8:00 PM and continue on Monday from 8:30 AM until the start of the service.
