Jeremy Sean Humphrey was born in Stillwater, Oklahoma, on August 3, 1969, to John “Rick” and Cathy Humphrey. Jeremy spent the past 42 years of his life in Sulphur, Louisiana. Jeremy loved life, his family, and friends, but most of all he loved his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, and lived it out daily. Jeremy went to be with Jesus on February 28, 2016, at the age of 46.
Jeremy attended Frasch Elementary, W.W. Lewis Middle, Sulphur High, & Victory Worship Center Christian Academy where he received the Most Christ-Like Award for many of the sports he played. He was a 1989 graduate of Victory Worship Center Christian Academy. He was our walking dictionary. He could spell any word any of us could ask him to spell. Upon graduation, Jeremy worked for Brookshire Brothers, moved on to work for Handy Dan’s Ice, and currently was employed at Lake Area Office Products as delivery driver.
Jeremy never met a stranger. He could make friends with a brick wall. He just had that outgoing personality. Jeremy would show complete strangers the love that God had for them. In 2013, Jeremy donated his entire check after officiating a football game to a team from the New Orleans area, whose school had been flooded due to a hurricane, to help get them new equipment. The check wasn’t much, but the thought behind it is what mattered most to those coaches and the team.
Jeremy’s love for sports led to him calling recreation softball and basketball for Sulphur Parks & Recreation for almost 20 years and junior high and high school football with the Lake Charles Area Football Officials Association for the last 13 years, as well as serving on the sideline crew at McNeese football games. He could tell you every detail about just about any sport’s person or team around, college or professional didn’t matter.
Jeremy loved his family. His two nephews meant the world to him, and he was always trying to plan things to do on the weekends when he could. Ryan and Johnathan looked up to their Uncle JJ as a role model. He loved them like they were his own children.
Jeremy loved to share about Jesus and how Jesus had changed his life. Jeremy had put his faith and trust in Jesus and was completely assured that he would one day be in heaven. He was an encourager to so many and was the first to be at the hospital to visit when anyone needed. He loved with unconditional love.
Jeremy’s theme verse for life was Philippians 4:13 – “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.”
Jeremy is survived by his parents: Rick & Cathy Humphrey, two sisters: Dawn Humphrey Cole & Amber Humphrey, two nephews: Ryan & Johnathan Cole, all of Sulphur, Louisiana. He is also survived by numerous aunts, uncles, & cousins.
He was preceded in death by his grandparents, John William and Frances Humphrey and Paul and Waneta Haga.
The family would like to thank all the emergency room staff and his physician, Jarmon Comeaux, for all the efforts they put into saving Jeremy’s life. John 14:1-3, 6 – “Do not let your hearts be troubled; believe in God, believe also in Me. In my Father’s house are many dwelling places; if it were not so, I would have told you; for I go to prepare a place for you. If I go to prepare a place for you, I will come again and receive you to Myself, that where I am, there you may be also...I am the way and the truth, and the life; no one comes to the Father but through Me.”
