Jerry Dean Miles was born on June 3, 1936, to the late Wilbur David and Carrie Alice Miles. He passed away on July 9, 2021 at the age of 85.
He was a graduate of Port Sulphur High School and attended the University of Southwestern Louisiana in Lafayette where he studied Petroleum Engineering. He was an avid sports enthusiast and excelled in high school football. He found the love of his life, Wilma Dean Breaux, and was happily married for over twenty-five years. He was employed in the petroleum industry and worked many years for his brother Wilbur at his oil field service company. As a teenager he would visit his grandparents in Central Indiana during summers and worked on their farm. He loved his connection with soil and nature. He was drafted into the army and specialized in photography for the military. He used this expertise in his small side business of wedding photography. Jerry will be remembered for his happy demeanor, teasing personality, care for others and his perfectionism. His hobbies included photography, flying and helping neighborhood friends with his handy-man skills.
Jerry will also be remembered for his love of flying. He possessed a private pilot’s license and for several years co-owned a plane. He was never hesitant to take family and friends for a quick flight. Even Jerry’s mother, who had an intense fear of flying and had never flown before, would fly with Jerry.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Wilbur David and Carrie Alice Miles; wife, Wilma Dean Breaux - Miles; sister-in-law, Marie Miles and brother-in-law Philip Melancon.
He is survived by sister, Beverly Ann Melancon of Portland, OR; brothers, Wilbur Lemar Miles of New Iberia and Dennis Lee Miles of Houston, TX; nieces, Renee Indest and Jaynellen Tannery and nephew Eric Melancon. Jerry is also survived by numerous great nieces and nephews.
The family would like to acknowledge the staff of St. Patrick Hospital and Harbor Hospice Lake Street for their care in Jerry’s final days.
Funeral services will be at 1:00 PM Tuesday, July 13, 2021 at St. Martin de Porres Catholic Church under the direction of Johnson Funeral Home. Interment services will follow at Prien Memorial Park. Visitation Tuesday will be from 12:00 PM until the time of service in the church.
