Joan Cowen

Joan Marie Cowen, 66, of Lake Charles passed away on February 14, 2023 at a local hospital surrounded by her loving family.  Joan was born on May 17, 1956 in Sioux City, Iowa to Alvin and Patricia Sedlacek. 

Joan graduated from East High School in Sioux City, Iowa in 1974. Joan met the love of her life, Wayne, in April of 1979 and they were married in August 1979 and moved to Lake Charles, LA. In 1980 their son, Charlie, was born. Her favorite hobbies were baking wedding cakes, shopping, watching Murder She Wrote, and caring for her family. In 2014 they were blessed with the new light of their life, their Grandchild Sawyer, and she became a full-time Grandma, her favorite job.

Those left to cherish Joan’s memory are her husband of 43 years, Wayne Cowen of Lake Charles, son, Charlie Cowen of Lake Charles, Grandchild, Sawyer Cowen, 3 sisters, Susan Wilton and husband Phillip of San Antonio, TX., Jane Bainbridge and husband Mark of Sioux City, Iowa, and Sandy Schroeder and husband Keith of Omaha, Nebraska, 1 brother, Steven Sedlacek and wife Robin of Allen, TX., Sister and Brother-In-Law Cheri Landry and husband Kevin, and 11 nieces and nephews. Joan was preceded in death by her father, Alvin Sedlacek, and her mother, Patricia Sedlacek.

A gathering of family and friends will be Monday, February 20, 2023, from 2:00PM to 3:00PM at Johnson Funeral Home, 4321 Lake St. Lake Charles, LA. 70605.  Funeral services will begin at 3:00PM also at the funeral home. Cremation arrangements were entrusted to Johnson Funeral Home.

Joan’s family would like to say a special thank you to Dr. Hall, Dr. Higgins and the staff at Lake Charles Memorial Wound Care Clinic, and also to Dr. Azevedo, Dr. Rubino, and all of the doctors and nurses on 5 Tower, 2 Tower, and ICU in Lake Charles Memorial Hospital for their loving care throughout this difficult time.
