Joan Hardeman Hickman

July 2, 1926 — October 28, 2021

Joan Hardeman Hickman, 95, passed away on Thursday, October 28th after a long and well lived life. Joan was adopted by her loving parents Fay C. Hardeman and Louise M. Hardeman on September 22, 1926, in Dallas, Texas at Hope Cottage. Her early years growing up were spent in Artesia, New Mexico. Her family moved to Lake Charles when her father was employed by Conoco. She attended Lake Charles High School her senior year. Joan met her best friend and faithful husband C. W. “Red” Hickman while both employed at Jud Reeves Chevrolet dealership. They were married November 19, 1949, and for fifty-six years enjoyed being together and raising their children.

Joan joins her husband, two sons, Sammy and Chuck, a daughter Pat, grandson Christopher and her son-in-law Freddie Davis. She is survived by her daughter Michael Ann Davis, granddaughter Jenny Rebecca Joan Bonham, great grandson Christian Michael Shanks, daughter-in-law Paula Walker Hickman and several nieces and nephews.

Nature and every animal living were important to her. She had compassion for the survival and well-being of all animals. She did her best to make sure that whenever it was possible to make the conditions of the vulnerable and weak improved, she would find a way to help. She lived her entire life as an advocate for nature and its creatures. Joan also loved all forms of art. Joan enjoyed painting and loved listening to music especially from the 1940s She was a dancing enthusiast from the Charleston to her favorite Tap Dancing. She volunteered as a Pink Lady at St. Patrick's Hospital for years and worked at the Hallmark Card shop. She really enjoyed being a Boy Scout Den Mother. The most cherished purpose in her life was being a loving wife and a mother teaching her children what was truly important in life. Lake Charles Bible Church for the last 31 years brought her so much joy and fellowship. This Church Body became her treasured extended family.

A celebration of her life will be officiated by Pastor Phil Carpenter. The visitation will be Wednesday, November 10, 2021, at 1:30 p.m. and the service begins at 2:30p.m. at Simple Traditions by Johnson Funeral Home, located at 3448 5th Avenue, Lake Charles. The burial will follow immediately after at Highland Memorial Gardens.
