JoAnn Cropper Mitchell, 79, of Lake Charles, LA, died at 3:37 AM on Monday, December 29, 2014. Mrs. Mitchell was born December 14, 1935 in Port Barrie, LA and was raised in Opelousas, LA, where she graduated high school. In 1954, she married the love of her life, Craig Anthony Mitchell and they traveled the world during his military career. They settled in Lake Charles twenty-five years ago to be near her sister, Belle. She was a member of Our Lady Queen of Heaven Catholic Church. During her earlier years, she enjoyed gardening and loved to spend time with her family. She will always be remembered as the true matriarch of the family who kept everyone connected. Mrs. Mitchell is survived by her children, Patrick Mitchell and wife Deitz of Pennsylvania, Michael Mitchell and wife Dana of Paducah, KY, Philip Mitchell and wife Alicia of Austin, TX, Pamela Stephen and husband Dustin of College Station, TX, and Anne Carter and husband Tim of Garland, TX; grandchildren, Ryan, Shane, Anthony, Eric, and Cory Mitchell, Bary Sheffield, Lori Evans, and Jonathan Morin; and eight great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Craig Anthony Mitchell; two sisters, Lilly Belle Higginbotham and Patricia Sonnier; and brother, Peter Cropper. Her funeral service will be held at 12:00 PM on Saturday, January 3, 2015 at Our Lady Queen of Heaven Catholic Church. Father Matthew Cormier will officiate. Burial will follow in Consolata Cemetery. Visitation will be at Johnson Funeral Home on Friday from 4:00 PM to 8:00 PM with a rosary at 6:00 PM. Visitation will continue on Saturday from 8:00 AM to 11:40 AM.
