Joe Dale Wilks, affectionately known as "Joe Joe" to all who loved him, passed away peacefully on Friday, November 1, 2024, at the age of 85. Surrounded by his devoted family and friends, Joe was called home to his heavenly reward. He was born on September 23, 1939, to Lottie Mae Perkins Wilks Butler and Grover Cecil Wilks.
Joe's life was marked by dedication, hard work, and a deep love for his family and community. For over 50 years, he was a skilled brick mason and the proud owner of Wilks Masonry. Joe also operated Mary Ann's Café in downtown Lake Charles for several years, where he made countless new friends. Later, he served as the maintenance supervisor for the Louisiana Third Circuit Court of Appeal for 25 years, earning the respect of all who knew him.
A man of faith, Joe was passionate about serving Christ and played an active role in the ministry at Eastwood Pentecostal Church, where he led worship for many years. His love for gospel music took him on the road, traveling across the country with various Southern gospel groups. Known for his sense of humor, Joe had a gift for lightening the mood with his jokes and stories, bringing happiness to others, and making those around him feel at ease.
In addition to his music ministry, Joe and his wife, Sue, hosted a weekly tradition that touched many lives. Every Sunday evening, after church services, they would open their home to visiting ministers and their families, serving ribeye steaks and a warm meal to all who were welcomed at their table. For those who had the privilege of sitting at Joe and Sue's table, it was more than just a meal—it was a reflection of their love and hospitality and a tangible experience of God's warmth and kindness.
Joe's legacy lives on in the hearts of those who knew him. He is survived by his beloved wife of 67 years, Sue Annette Henderson Wilks, whom he affectionately called "baby"; his cherished daughter, Kimberly Suzanne Wilks Johnson, and son-in-law, James Johnson; grandchildren Katelyn Skye Wilks Johnson (Joshua) and Kolby Spencer Wilks Johnson; his sister Ruth Butler Soto; sister-in-law, Hazel Wilks; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and extended family, all of whom will miss him dearly.
Joe was preceded in death by his parents, his brother Gerald Wilks, his nephew Harris Soto, and his cousin Murrell Ewing (Joan). A visitation will be held on Friday, November 8, 2024, from 4:00 PM to 7:00 PM at Eastwood Pentecostal Church in Lake Charles, LA. A celebration of life service will follow at 7:00 PM. A private graveside service will be held at Old Ritchie Cemetery on Saturday, November 9, 2024.
Joe's family would like to express their gratitude for the outpouring of love and support during this difficult time. He will be remembered as a man of integrity, joy, and deep faith, whose legacy will continue to inspire all who had the privilege of knowing him.
