John Austin Schroll, 83, departed this life on Thursday, October 17, 2013 at the Southwest Louisiana War Veterans Home in Jennings, Louisiana. Born in New Orleans to Charles William Schroll, Sr. and Gladys Rita Bringhurst Schroll, Mr. Schroll lived most of his life in Lake Charles. He was a graduate of Bolton High School in Alexandria, Louisiana, where he participated in football. He attended McNeese State University on football and ROTC scholarships, graduating with a degree in English and as a 2nd Lieutenant. He was one of the first four-year graduates from McNeese. While attending both Bolton High School and McNeese, he was active in various student organizations. Upon graduating from college, Mr. Schroll served his country in the United States Army during Korean Conflict. After his tour of duty with the Army, he worked at Davidson Sash and Door Company for twenty-eight years in the Lake Charles and Jennings plants and was later self-employed as a draftsman designing house plans. He was a member of Our Lady of Good Council Catholic Church. Those left to cherish his memory are his wife, Sylvia Delord Schroll of Lake Charles; one son, Phil Schroll of Lake Charles; one daughter, Sheri Rains and spouse Dennis; two stepsons, Mark Grosze of Bailey, N.C. and Andrew Grosze of Wilmington, N.C.; four stepdaughters, Martha G. Williams and spouse, Ray of Houston, Tex., Ann G. Bailey and spouse Dr. Vince of Jennings, La., Mary Elizabeth G. Paul and spouse Dr. Thomas of Koenigstein, Germany and Cynthia G. Jeter and spouse Robert of Dallas, Tx.; 5 grandchildren, 13 step grandchildren, 5 step great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, Charles "Chuck" Edwin Schroll, Charles William "Bill" Schroll, Jr. and Albert Bringhurst "I.E." Schroll. Memorial services will be held at 2 p.m. on Monday, October 21, 2013 at Johnson Funeral Home. Deacon Glenn Vieu will officiate. Visitation will be on Monday from 11a.m. until service time. Entombment will be at Consolata Cemetery. The family would like to express their grateful appreciation for the compassionate care given their loved one by Dr. Amanda LaComb and the fabulous staff of the Southwest Louisiana War Veterans Home, Father Charles McMillin, and the hospice care staff of Amedisys.
