John Leoniel Hartman

August 18, 1944 — April 7, 2024

John Leoniel Hartman, 79, passed away at his home on Sunday, April 7, 2024, surrounded by loved ones. John was born in Texas City, TX, on August 18,1944, and moved to Lake Charles at age five, where he lived for the remainder of his life.

John received his bachelor’s degree in business from McNeese State University. He served in the United States Air Force for four years and treasured his time overseas, especially due to the fact that he met the love of his life, Ann, while there.  He owned John L. Hartman Contractors for over 35 years and was known by everyone for his strong work ethic. John was a devout Christian and was very active at First United Methodist Church. He served on multiple boards and committees at the church and was a member of the choir for over 40 years. John was always looking for ways to help others and served on the board at the Women’s Shelter and Habitat for Humanity. He also volunteered for United Way and the Literacy Council to name a few.

John was a true family man and treasured the time he spent with them. He coached all of his daughters’ softball teams, loved traveling as a family, and relaxing at home. He was an avid golfer, enjoyed reading and watching all sports, but especially his beloved Saints.

Those left to cherish his memory are his wife of 52 years, Ann Gabrielle Ryan Hartman, daughters; Erin Hartman, Christine Hartman, and Jennifer Hartman Heemer and her husband Grant. His pride and joy were his two grandchildren, Jack and Charlotte.

John was preceded in death by his parents, Maurice and Jeanne Hartman and his sister, Marcia Bancroft.

The family would like to express their gratitude to LeeAnna’s Caregiving Service and the staff at Harbor Hospice for the care and compassion shown to John in his final days.

Services will be at First United Methodist Church on Saturday, April 20, 2024, at 11 AM with visitation starting at 9AM. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you make a donation to Oasis- A Safe Haven or a charity of your choice.
