John Racca

October 23, 1923 — April 12, 2016

John Hulin Racca, 92, of Lake Charles, died suddenly on Tuesday, April 12, 2016, at a local hospital surrounded by his loving family.

Born in Lacassine, John worked on his father’s farm as a child until going into the Army. This is where he learned the value of a dollar, one of his famous sayings, “Don’t take any wooden nickels.” He also learned dedication and how to work hard on his rice and cattle farm, as well as how to cherish life – all of which he passed on to the other generations by always “talking about it.”

He worked hard at his place of business, Racca Service Shop, getting it to grow. He was known to be able to fix anything. He sacrificed a lot for his family, burning his hands, scraping his knuckles, working without an air conditioner and even letting people have free service if need be. After retirement he enjoyed caring for grandchildren who brought laughter to him.

He has left a place in everyone’s heart who has met him over his 92 glorious years. We will all miss him dearly and when we meet again, we know he will say “Maw Maw, look who came to see us.”

Preceding John in death are his parents, Herbert and Angela Racca; daughter, Carolyn Jo Racca Howard; one sister; and six brothers.

He is survived by his wife of over 74 years, Ruth Foreman Racca, Lake Charles; two daughters, Sandra Gayle Davis (Bo), Lake Charles, and Janet Lea Polito (James), Lake Charles; one son, Hulin David Racca (Mariel), Lake Charles; three sisters, Edna Witherwax, Verdie Miller, Mary Ann Talbott; and brother, J.D.
