John Daniel “Johnny” St. John, 81, of Lake Charles, passed away on Sunday February 9, 2025 in Lake Charles following a brief illness. From childhood in Westlake, Johnny lived life on his own terms—laid-back, full of laughter, and always surrounded by good company. He wasn’t one to chase titles or careers, but he built something much more important: a life filled with people who loved him, great stories, and countless unforgettable moments. For nearly half a century, he shared a love story with Woo, a respected artist and art teacher, and the love of his life. Their journey together was filled with adventure and deep devotion for each other. They loved to travel, making many trips to Scotland and England in particular, where he made lifelong friends wherever he went. He was an avid pool player and often shared his pro tips with friends over a cold beer.
He adored his mother and once gave her the ultimate gift—behind-home-plate tickets to watch her favorite baseball player, Johnny Bench, in action. It was one of many ways he showed his deep love and gratitude for those who meant the most to him. He endowed ongoing scholarship funds at McNeese to honor his mother for aspiring teachers, and one for his nephew David Dommert for up and coming tennis athletes. Johnny’s open heart and fearless acceptance of all people, regardless of background, status, or lifestyle, were hallmarks of his character.
For many years, he was a fixture at Hocus Pocus Liquors on Broad Street, where his official title was “spiritual advisor.” And indeed, his spirit was one that uplifted, guided, and brought light to all who knew him. Though he has left this world, his unique energy, his boundless love for life, and the memories he created will endure forever in the hearts of those he touched.
Preceding John in death are his parents, Daniel David and Margaret Ruth James St. John; beloved wife and best friend of 46 years, Mildred “Woo” Clarke St. John, and his sister Rose Cooke of Sulphur. He leaves to his memory, daughter, Aileen Olmsted and grandson John Reilly Richard of Lake Charles; sister, Nancy Dommert of Jennings and several nieces, nephews and extended family of the heart, as well as countless friends who will forever cherish his impact on their lives.
A celebration of his extraordinary life will be held at Johnson Funeral Home of Lake Charles from 3:00 PM until 7:00 PM on on Friday February 14, 2025. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to the Margaret Ruth “Maggie” James St. John Memorial Scholarship in Early Education (Please reference fund # 07565) or the David Kirk Dommert Memorial Scholarship (fund # 08578).
