Johnnie Mae Cureton went peacefully to be with her Lord on June 19, 2014. She was born on December 28, 1924, in Douglass, Texas. She married her childhood sweetheart, Elzie Cureton, on Sept. 16, 1943. They lived in Los Angeles, Shreveport, Nederland and Lake Charles before settling in Westlake to raise their children. Johnnie Mae worked during WWII for the Naval shipyard in Orange and for 21 years in the McNeese Library. She was a devoted wife and wonderful mother. She was known for her great cooking and would often share that talent by taking goodie baskets to friends, neighbors and those in need. She is preceded in death by her parents, John and Hattie Grimes, sisters, Lurline Kessinger and Estelle Worsham, great granddaughter, Kinsleigh Cureton and her devoted husband of 62 years, Elzie Howard Cureton. She is survived by her children Jimmy Cureton and wife, Leah, of Lake Charles; Phillip Cureton and wife, Lynda, of Moss Bluff; and Christi Cureton Domingue and husband, Joe, of Spring, Texas. She was the loving "Nannie" to five grandchildren, Blake, Blair and Todd Cureton, Jordan and Garrett Domingue and three great grandchildren Cardyn, Carson and Calvin Cureton. Visitation will be from 5-8 on Saturday, June 21 and continue on Sunday from 1:00 - 2:00 pm. A celebration of her life will be held in the chapel of Johnson's Funeral Home on Sunday, June 22 at 2:00 pm. Dr. Steve Bennett will officiate and Hugh Wallis will provide the music. Burial will be in Westlake Magnolia Cemetery. The family would like to thank Felisa Howard, Belkis Barbus, Traveaus Guillory, Madeline Crenshaw, Perri Holmes, Sharon Stewart, Dr. Timothy Neidigh, the staff at Emeritus Assisted Living, Southern Care Hospice and Melissa Fritzinger for the kind and compassionate care they gave to her.
