Johnny Rayford Gilbert

May 12, 1945 — September 11, 2013

Johnny Gilbert, 68, passed away peacefully September 11, 2013, at his home surrounded by family and loved ones. He was born May 12, 1945, in DeRidder, LA and spent his childhood in Ragley, La. He graduated from Ragley High School then joined the Army and served a tour in Korea. After returning from overseas, he moved to Lake Charles, LA and joined the Lake Charles Fire Department in 1969. He bravely served his community for 29 years protecting life and property before retiring at the rank of captain in 1998. Johnny was a member of Trinity Baptist Church where he was very active serving in numerous church groups and outreach programs. In addition he was involved in MANNA ministries as well as volunteering his time helping the needy through Boulevard Baptist Church. He was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather. His greatest joy, in retirement, was spending time with his four grandchildren and traveling. He is preceded in death by his parents, William (Bill) Gilbert and Fara Nation Gilbert as well as his brothers and sister Larry Gilbert, Jimmie Gilbert, Jerry Gilbert, Benny Gilbert, and Billie Gilbert McFatter. He is survived by his wife, Jane Daigle Gilbert, son, Dr. Timothy Gilbert and wife Shelly, daughter, Fara Gilbert Seal and husband Leonard, grandchildren; Presley Gilbert, Aubrey Gilbert, John Allen Seal, and Layla Seal; a brother, Harry Gilbert and two sisters Betty Broussard and Barbara Gilbert as well as many nieces and nephews. The Gilbert family would like to offer their sincere appreciation to all of his physicians and the I.C.U. staff of St. Patrick Hospital. In addition, we are grateful for all the thoughts, prayers, and kind gestures exhibited by so many during this difficult time. Funeral services will be at 2:00 PM Saturday, September 14, 2013 at Trinity Baptist Church under the direction of Johnson Funeral Home. Reverend Steve James will officiate. Interment will follow in Consolata Cemetery. Visitation Friday will be from 3:00 PM until 9:00 PM in the funeral home. Visitation Saturday will be from 10:00 AM until the time of service in the church.
