Joseph Edes “Eddie” Abshire, 84, of Lake Charles died Sunday, October 27, 2019 in a local hospital.
Mr. Abshire was born and raised in Kaplan, LA, lived most of his life in Lake Charles and lived the past five years in Baton Rouge. During his younger years he worked as a Longshoreman for the Port of Lake Charles and in the Oil Field. He worked throughout his life in grocery retail, many in management, for A&P, George Theriot’s, Mere’s Grocery and Marcantel’s. During his spare time in enjoyed fishing and shrimping. His greatest joy was being surrounded by family, weekend gathering for barbeque, watching ballgames, wrestling, and playing cards. He was an avid LSU, Saints and Astros fan. Mr. Abshire was a member of Our Lady Queen of Heaven Catholic Church and a former Knight of Columbus. He will be most remembered for his belief in family unity, an admirable quality he has instilled in his children and grandchildren and for always being there to lend a helping hand.
He leaves to honor his memory six children, Debra Abshire of Lake Charles, Kenneth Abshire and wife Cathleen of Baton Rouge, Jesse Abshire and wife Gwen of Clear Lake, TX, Billy Abshire and wife Melony of Sulphur, Donald Abshire and wife Jazmyne of Lake Charles and Steve Abshire and wife Terry of Moss Bluff; twenty three grandchildren; twenty five great-grandchildren and nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his wife of forty-eight years, Emily Breaux Abshire; daughter, Brenda Abshire; granddaughter, April Young and his parents, Odelon and Marie Pellerin Abshire.
Funeral services will be at 1:00 PM Thursday in the Johnson Funeral Home Chapel. Deacon George Carr will officiate. Interment will follow in Abshire Cemetery in Kaplan, LA. Visitation Wednesday will be from 5:00 PM until 9:00 PM. Visitation Thursday will be from 10:00 AM until the time of service in the funeral home.
