Joseph Lowenthal, 87, of Lake Charles, passed peacefully Wednesday January 2, 2013 in his home.
A native of Lexington, Kentucky, he was born June 29, 1925 to Manual and Sarah Jacobs Lowenthal. He honorably served our country during World War II in the 274th Infantry in Europe, and was involved in the Battle of the Bulge. A longtime resident of Lake Charles, he was the owner of One Hour Martinizing, one of the largest dry cleaners in the state of Louisiana. Joseph was a member of the Temple Sinai and many civic organizations, including the Pioneer Club of Lake Charles, Optimist Club, a 33rd Degree Mason, Shriner and member of the Habibi Temple, B'Nai B'Rith, W.B. Williamson Post # 1 of the American Legion and VFW Post 2436.
Those left to honor and cherish his memory are his three children, Michael Lowenthal, Frankfort, KY; Marc Lowenthal wife Wally, Prairieville, LA; and Margaret Jo Lowenthal, Davis, CA; one granddaughter, Holly Lowenthal, HI; wife, Beverly Greenburg Lowenthal, Louisville, KY; four step children, thirteen step grandchildren, five step great grandchildren; sister, Gladys Bass and husband Lewis, Louisville, KY and numerous nieces and nephews.
Graveside services were held on Thursday January 3, 2013 at Lexington Cemetery in Lexington Kentucky with Rabbi Mark Kline officiating. A memorial will be at Johnson Funeral Home on Sunday January 6, 2013 with visitation from 12:00 pm to 1:00 pm and the memorial starting at 1:00 p.m. with Rabbi Barry Weinstein officiating.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that gifts in honor of his memory be made to the Temple Sinai, 713 Hodges St., Lake Charles, LA 70601 or the Jewish War Veterans of the United States, 1811 R Street Northwest, Washington, DC 20009.
