Joseph Zannie Leger

Joseph “Zannie” Leger, 79, of Lake Charles, LA, died on Friday, May 8, 2020 in a local hospital.

Mr. Leger was born September 28, 1940 in Eunice, LA.  He was raised in Bell City, LA, where he graduated from Bell City High School and lettered in football, track and basketball.  He worked as a farmer until 1980 and then worked in apartment maintenance.  He also enjoyed delivering Meals on Wheels and loved to visit with those he helped.  Mr. Leger was raised in the Catholic faith and was a member of the Knights of Columbus.  Zannie will always be remembered for his love of Cajun music and passing a good time.  He competed in the Senior Citizen Olympics, competing in Bean Bag Baseball.  He also enjoyed reading and learning about Native American culture and American History.

Mr. Leger is survived by his children, Anthony Leger and wife Shirley of Carlyss, LA, Roxanne Leger of Lake Charles, Stephanie Leger Johnson and husband Terence of Fairfax, VA, and Anjeanette Leger of Lake Charles; siblings, Stella Broussard, Paul Wayne Leger, Dianne Thibodeaux, Timothy Leger, and Kenneth Leger; nine grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Christine Mallett Leger; son, Kevin Brian Leger; and his parents, Alex and Ament Fontenot Leger.

In compliance with current state regulations, private services have been entrusted to Johnson Funeral Home of Lake Charles for the family only. Services will be officiated by Father Antony Rojo Koonathan.  Burial will take place in Lacassine Cemetery under the direction of Johnson Funeral Home of Lake Charles.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Zannie’s name to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, P. O. Box 50, Memphis, TN  38101-9929.
