Kerry Leon Durr, Sr, 83, of Moss Bluff, was safely taken into the arms of Jesus on Friday, August 18, 2017, at his home surrounded by his family.
Kerry was a native of Many, LA and longtime resident of Moss Bluff. He was a 1951 graduate of Marthaville High School and honorably served our country in the United States Army after receiving his undergraduate degree from Northwestern. While in the Army, he was assigned to military intelligence in Frankfurt, Germany. Following his military service, Kerry received his graduate degree from Northwestern in 1962 and his Masters plus thirty from McNeese. He professionally and proudly served our community as a lifetime educator and longtime principal of Sam Houston High School. He was named principal of the year by the South Central District of the United States in 1974.
Kerry was very active in the community. He was a life member of the NEA, Louisiana PTA and Louisiana High School Athletic Association. He was a member of the Civitan Club and Kiwanis clubs in Moss Bluff, the VFW, NASSP, LAP, LAE-CAE and served on the Calcasieu Parish zoning commission. He was an active member and formerly served as president of the Calcasieu Parish Retired Teachers Association. Kerry was named a Goodwill Ambassador for the city of Lake Charles. He was also a longtime member of First Baptist Church of Moss Bluff where he served as an usher and Director of Church Training.
Kerry was also an owner and partner of Metropolitan Lake Charles Distribution Corporation, D & D T.V. and Appliance Center, Lenwood Apartments and Louisiana Mobile Medical, Inc.
Preceding Kerry in death are his parents, Mike Benjamin and Mildred Mae Adcock Durr, sister, Glenda Fay Covey and brothers, Doyle Wayne Durr and Don Aaron Durr; and infant son, James Franklin Durr and infant grandson, Reid Main. Those left to honor and cherish his memory are his beloved wife of 52 years, Neval Hilton Durr; son, Kerry Leon (Len) Durr, Jr., and wife Maria; daughter, Kendra Leann Durr Main and husband Donald; grandchildren, James Durr, Joshua Durr, Sierra Jeter, Sydney Main, Nathan Main, Drew Main, Caroline Main, Rica Dean Crater, Anna Maria Crater and Jacob Corbin Crater; sisters-in-law Geneva Loftin Durr, Hilda Grappe Durr and Hazel Locothia Hilton; and numerous cousins, nieces, nephews and extended family.
Visitation will be at Johnson Funeral Home on Tuesday, August 22, 2017, from 4:00 PM until 8:00 PM. Visitation continues on Wednesday, August 23 at First Baptist Church of Moss Bluff from 9:00 AM until the hour of service, 11:00 AM. The Rev. Steve Bennett will officiate. Graveside interment services will be at 3:30 PM at Prewitt’s Chapel Cemetery near Florien.
Serving as pallbearers will be Len Durr, James Durr, Josh Durr, Michael Durr, Donnie Durr, Wayne Durr, Donald Main, and Nathan Main.
