Larry Hargett

June 24, 1935 — August 9, 2018

Larry Hargett, 83, of Lake Charles, died Thursday, August 9 at St. Patrick Hospital.

 

Mr. Hargett was born in Port Arthur, Texas on June 24, 1935, to Talmadge and Hattie Hargett. He joined the U. S. Air Force after graduating from Thomas Jefferson High School. He served from 1954 to 1958 as a weather man, and made the National Weather Service his life’s work. He retired after 42 years of service in 1997. He was a member of Scottish Rite, Habibi Shrine and Masonic Lodge 165 where he served as a Master Mason and past Master of the Lodge. He married the love of his life, Ellen Courts in 1962 and they shared 50 years together.

 

Mr. Hargett was a wonderful father who supported his children in all of their endeavors from baseball to drill team. He was adored by his three grandchildren, Emma and Parker Hargett and Taylor Powers. He was their cheerleader at Tai Kwon Do, pole vaulting, football, basketball and soccer. He was so proud of each of them.

 

Mr. Hargett was preceded in death by his parents; his loving wife of Ellen Jean Hargett; two brothers, Bob and John Hargett; and sister, Lillian Lloyd.

 

He is survived by his daughter, Pam Powers of Lake Charles; son, Russell Hargett and Beth, also of Lake Charles; grandchildren, Emma and Parker Hargett of Lake Charles and Taylor Powers and wife Jessica of Missouri. He is also survived by his sister, Margaret Becker of Bridge City; brother-in-law, Dickie Courts of Vidor; and sister-in-laws, Faye Goodman and Hazel Courts both of Vidor, Texas; and many nieces and nephews.

 

His funeral service will be held at Johnson Funeral Home on Sunday, August 12, 2018 at 3 PM. The Rev. Katie Simpson will officiate. Burial will take place in Prien Memorial Park Cemetery following the service. Visitation will be held at Johnson Funeral Home on Sunday from 1 PM until the start of the service.
