Lillie Ray Levy

October 13, 1947 — August 23, 2023

Lillie Ray Levy, of Lake Charles LA, passed away after a courageous battle with cancer, on Wednesday August 25, 2023. She was 75 years young.

Lillie Ray attended the Lake Charles City Schools and graduated from Lake Charles High School in 1965. She was a proud member of the Kilties. She attended LSU, where she was a member of Alpha Epsilon Phi Sorority. She graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in Elementary Education in 1968 from LSU, master’s in education from the University of North Florida in 1975 and Specialist in Education from the University from the University of Florida.  She received her National Teacher Certification in 1999.

Ms. Levy taught school for the New Orleans School Board from 1968-1969. She then moved to Jacksonville, Florida and taught for the Duval County School System from 1969 until her retirement in 2011 after a career in teaching that spanned 43 years. She moved back to Lake Charles in 2015.

Lillie Ray is survived by her brother, Sam Levy and wife Laurie of Iowa City, IA; nephews, Aaron Levy and wife Laurie of Sedona, Arizona; Matt Levy and wife Natalia and son Tiago, all of St. Paul, Minnesota; Miles Levy and wife Ashley, also of St. Paul, Minnesota; and numerous friends and family of the heart.

Lillie Ray was preceded in death by her parents, Bernard and Ann Madson Levy and grandparents, Samuel and Esther (Nannie) Levy, all of Lake Charles.

The family would like to extend their deep, heartfelt appreciation to her close friends, Kay Allison Benton, Betty Harlow Anderson, Beth Reese Campbell and Nancy Key Martin (deceased) for their great love, care and laughs through the years.

Special thanks to the staff at Grand Cove and Harbor Hospice for their compassionate and professional care to not only Lillie, but to her friends and family during this difficult time.

A funeral service will be held on Friday, August 25, 2023 at Johnson Funeral Home of Lake Charles at 4:30 PM. Rabbi Barry Weinstein will lead services. Burial will follow at the family plot at Temple Sinai Hebrew Rest Cemetery in Lake Charles.

In Lieu of flowers, Ms. Levy requested donations to be made to the Hobo Hotel for Cats, 650 School Street, Lake Charles, LA 70607, Temple Sinai of Lake Charles, or River Garden Hebrew Home for the Aged, 11401 Old St. Augustine Rd., Jacksonville, FL 32258.
