Lyndell Wava Morris Stewart (lovingly known as “Grandmommy”) passed away at 12:25 AM Saturday morning, January 20, 2018 at a healthy age of 93.
Mrs. Stewart was born in 1924 in Lake Charles to Ettie and Clyde Morris. Lyndell attended LCHS and was one of the original Kilties. After high school she became a graduate of McNeese Junior College and was a member of Phi Theta Kappa and Beta Sigma Phi sororities. She served as Executive Assistant to the plant manager at CITGO until she retired.
Grandmommy was 93 years old when she passed away but truly young at heart. Into her last year she maintained a busy social schedule filled with church groups, monthly lunch dates with cousins, and a weekly game of bridge with a group of friends (in which she was known to be the sharpest player). She was happy to entertain guests with a cup of coffee, especially if you wanted to hear about the latest from the sports page. Grandmommy was an avid reader, reading at least one book a week while also studying her Bible daily. Every Saturday and Sunday you could find her at her daughter’s house yelling at the LSU Tigers and the Saints while waiting for her BBQ chicken or steak to be ready. She was a lover of cats and was proceeded in death by her cat, Mischief, and survived by her cat, Boots.
Left to cherish Mrs. Stewart’s memory is her beloved daughter Jane White and husband James of Lake Charles; grandchildren Paula Hilliard and husband Kenny of Lake Charles, Chris White of Washington DC, and James Chance Hearn of Las Vegas, NV; as well as her great grandchildren Madison Lynn Hilliard and Braden Dale Hilliard.
She was proceeded in death by her parents, husband James H. Stewart Jr., son Dale Marvin Stewart, daughter Anne Hearn and son-in-law Paul Hearn; and her sisters Bunny Walzel and Rosemary Duvall, and brother Harry G. Morris.
Most of all, Grandmommy will be remembered for her kindness, her infectious positive mood, kind heart, and her unwavering commitment to Christ. She brought joy and warmth into the lives of all who knew her, and has undoubtedly left this world a better place than she found it.
Mrs. Stewart’s funeral service will be held at Johnson Funeral Home on Tuesday, January 23, at 2:00 PM. Dr. Alan Buckley will officiate. Visitation will begin at 10:00 AM Tuesday at the funeral home until the time of the service.
Honorary pallbearers will be James White, Chris White, Chance Hearn, Kenny Hilliard, and Braden Hilliard.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the First Baptist Church at 830 Hodges St. Lake Charles, LA 70601.
