Mabel Newman Ferrell

Mabel Newman Ferrell, 102, longtime resident of the Lake Charles area, passed away Monday, March 27, 2023 in Beaumont, TX.  Mabel was born on April 11, 1920 in Jennings, LA. to the Rev. John and Lucille Newman.

 She grew up in southwest Louisiana being one of ten children. Mabel had a long and wonderful life, she passed away knowing she had no regrets at the age of “102.95”.  She loved life and always had a big smile to greet you with.  She was an optimistic and very positive person.  Saw the good in everyone and everything.  She could do anything she set her mind to: drawing, sewing, upholstering, ect.  In the early 60’s she joined an exercise class at College Oaks Elementary, later she was asked to take it over and taught until the late 80’s.  Mabel loved flowers and a pretty yard, pulling weeds and planting were her joy.  In 1997 she moved to Beaumont, joined the Wellness Center and exercised 3 days a week faithfully until her mid 90’s.  Behind her apartment and in the courtyard she planted beautiful and seasonal flowers, as well as a tree or 2.  So much so that people stopped to see and talk with her, the Apartment Complex loved her generous gift to their property. One lady called her “Miss Bloom” as no one really knew her name, just her beautiful gift of a “Green Thumb”.   Mabel moved to Collier Park Assisted Living in 2020 where she resided until her death.  She was happy in her apartment and very happy in Assisted Living (they had exercise class’s as well).  She was a social Little Lady and she visited and cared about everyone.  She loved it there and they all loved her.

Those left to cherish Mabel’s memory are two daughters, Linda Ferrell Way of Beaumont, TX. And Vicky Ferrell of LaBelle, TX., 3 grandchildren, 4 great grandchildren, 5 great-great grandchildren, and sister-in-law Denise Newman.  She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Ralph Ferrell, one daughter, Marsha Ferrell Stephens and 9 siblings.

Graveside services will be held Saturday, April 1, 2023 at 2:30PM at Prien Memorial Park located at 2220 Country Club Rd. in Lake Charles.  Visitation will be at 1:30PM at the cemetery.  Funeral arrangements were entrusted to Johnson Funeral Home, 4321 Lake St. Lake Charles, LA. 70605.
