Margaret "Marge" Womack

December 27, 1933 — March 27, 2015

Margaret Elise Gibson Womack, "Marge", peacefully passed on the evening of Friday, March 27, 2015 after a lengthy battle with Alzheimer's. Her daughter was at her bedside. Her Christian faith shined in all she did in her roles of wife, mother, grandmother Oma, aunt, teacher, singer, and friend. Marge was born on December 27, 1933 in the East Texas family home in Cushing to Bertha and Harriss Gibson. Marge grew up in Cushing and later attended Lon Morris College in Jacksonville where she met her future husband, Ralph Womack, while standing in line for registration. They were married June 11, 1955. Both subsequently attended Stephen F. Austin where she graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in education. Her education continued at McNeese State University with a Master's Degree, Plus 30 and a Gifted Education Certification. She taught in the Calcasieu Parish school system for greater than 30 years, primarily at St. John Elementary and Western Heights, and was one of the first SPARK teachers in the area. Her devotion to children was evident daily as she loved and believed in them and was committed to the development of each one's potential. She was an inspiration and role model to so many of her students. Attending the First United Methodist Church for 49 years, she loved singing in the church choir and was a member of the United Methodist Women. She also belonged to Delta Kappa Gamma, enjoyed working as a Mary Kay consultant, and was a loyal soprano in the Louisiana Choral Foundation for years. Music was a joy for her. Generous and sweet, Marge had a kind word for all. Her beautiful smile would brighten the mood of anyone with her. Her compassion for all people was obvious to others and made a deep and lasting impression on all her children. She was preceded in death by her husband of 49 years, Dr. Ralph Womack, and a sister Charlotte Gibson. Mrs. Womack is survived by her son Clay (Eleanor) Womack of Austin, Texas, and their children, Chase, Joshua, Samuel, Joy, Grace, Luke, Clay James, David Robert, and Faith, also son David (Carol) Womack of Austin, Texas and their children, Reagan, Marshall, and Garrett, and daughter Melissa (Richard) Gilmore of Lake Charles, and their children Jamie, Skylar, Rikki, Darby, and Piper. A sister, Jeannine St. Peter, of Beaumont, Texas, also survives, as well as many loving cousins, and nephews and nieces. Her funeral service will be held at 1:00 PM on Wednesday April 1, 2015 at the First United Methodist Church. Reverend Weldon Bares will officiate. Private burial will be in Westlake Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be at Johnson Funeral Home on Tuesday from 4:00 PM to 7:00 PM and continue on Wednesday at the church from 9:00 AM until the start of the service. Memorial contributions can be made to First United Methodist Church, 812 Kirkman Street, Lake Charles, LA 70601.
