Marian Materne Morgan

November 15, 1943 — May 5, 2021

Marian Materne Morgan, 77, died on May 5th, 2021 in Lake Charles, surrounded by her family.  Marian, known lovingly by her family as Teedie or Slim or Mimi, was a sweet and devoted wife, mother, grandmother, sister, teacher and friend.  She was a lifelong resident of Lake Charles and gave generously to her community.  She attended St. Charles Academy, where she was an active contributor in  many organizations and a leader on sports teams.  Marian graduated from McNeese University, earning both her bachelor and masters degrees.  She dedicated her professional life to math and science education in Calcasieu Parish from 1979 to 2014.  In those thirty-five years, she taught at J I Watson, LaGrange and Oak Park Middle Schools, ending her career at Moss Bluff Middle School teaching advanced math and science in the gifted programs.  She was a conscientious and compassionate teacher who worked hard to help her students both learn and love to learn.   Marian was an avid athlete throughout her life, beginning in high school with varsity basketball and cheerleading.  She was a skilled skier and tennis player.  She and her husband hiked each summer in the Rocky Mountains and were active scuba divers. 

Marian is survived by her husband of thirty-nine years, Robert E. “Robbie” Morgan, an attorney practicing in Lake Charles for fifty-two years.  She is mother to two daughters: Lisa Quarles Barse of Dallas and Pamela Quarles-Adams of Statesville, NC, and to five step-daughters: Janet Morgan Thielen of Lake Charles, Lisa Morgan Counce of Houston, Kristi Morgan George of Lake Charles, Denise Morgan Perry of Phoenix, and Lee Morgan Robinson of Lake Charles. Her four grandchildren are Isabelle Patricia Barse, Alden Olivia Barse, Maxwell John Fruge and Noah Paul Sanders.  Her five siblings are Patricia Materne Crull (Richard), Michael D. Materne (Beatrice Baldwin), Peggy Materne Jones (Jeffrey), Christine Materne Carter (Wayne)  and Julie Materne Shirley (Russell). 

Marian was preceded in death by her parents Alton Alexander Materne and Lucille Piraro Materne and her grandparents Joseph Wallace Materne and Cora Chrysler Materne and Martin Anthony Piraro and Virginia (Jenny) Jennaro Piraro.  A private family service will be held at a later time.  In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the Alzheimer’s Association at https://www.alz.org.
