Martha J. Winters

February 22, 1925 — March 21, 2012

For I am now ready to be offered, and the times of my departure is at hand. I have fought the good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith.

Martha Janet Fitzgibbon Winters was promoted to glory on March 21, 2012.


She was a member of the 1941 Women's Mississippi State Basketball Championship team from Drew, Mississippi. Mrs. Winters was also a member of The Salvation Army church for over fifty years, where she held various positions in the Sunday School and Ladies Home League programs. She retired from the YMCA in 1987.


Born in Warren, Arkansas, on February 22, 1925, and lived in Longville, She is lovingly survived by seven sons and five daughters, Margie Chapman and her husband Jimmy of Many, LA, Judy Hilts and her husband Don of South Royalton, VT, Betty George and her husband Jimmy of Azle, TX, Billy Winters and his wife Janice of Ennis, TX, Oscar Winters and his wife Lorraine, Joe Winters and his wife Claudia of Moss Bluff, LA, Dale Winters and his wife JoBella of Lake Charles, LA, Janet Dugart and her husband Don of Kingwood, TX, Martin Winters and his wife Donna of Weaver, AL, Jeff Winters of Lake Charles, LA, Missy Bell and her husband Benny of LeBlanc, LA, and Mark Winters of Longville, LA. She is also survived by 39 grandchildren and 30 great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. Martha is also survived by one sister, Thelma Brooks. She will be missed by all who knew and loved her.


She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband Clarence Willard Winters; one son, Charles Winters; one daughter, Jerri Winters Kimrey Canezaro Garza; four sisters and seven brothers; as well as several brothers- and sisters-in-law, one grandchild, one great grandchild and nieces and nephews.


Her funeral will be at 2:00 PM, Friday, March 23, 2012 in the Johnson Funeral Home Chapel. Pastor Jimmy George and Major Dan Ford will officiate. Burial will be Old Ritchie Cemetery in Moss Bluff. Visitation will be from 5:00 PM until 9:00 PM, today and from 9:00 AM until time of service Friday in the funeral home.
