Mary Alma Bush Pennison, 98, of Lake Charles died at 9:45 AM on Saturday, July 16, 2016 in her residence.
Mrs. Pennison was born on March 31, 1918 in Weathersby, MS and moved to Lake Charles in 1953 from Ferriday, LA. She graduated in 1936 with honors from Natchez High School where she played basketball for three years. In her earlier years she worked as an accountant at HF Byrnes Department Store in Natchez, MS for two years, at Pasternack Hardware in Ferriday, LA for two years, at the Louisiana State Capital in Baton Rouge, LA for four years (where she met and married her husband on August 8, 1942), and then as church secretary for Emmanuel Baptist Church in Lake Charles, LA. She retired and chose to stay at home with her family and raise her children. Mrs. Pennison was a member of Sale Street Baptist Church where she was a Sunday school teacher.
She enjoyed knitting, crocheting, sewing, and cooking.
Those left to cherish her memory are a daughter, Judith Ann Carnahan (Truman) of Lake Charles; a son, Junius Louis Pennison, Jr. (Carrie) of Menifee, CA; four grandchildren; and seven great grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 71 years, Junius Louis Pennison, Sr.; her parents, Norval Otis and Maud Alma Baggett Bush; and two brothers, Norval Otis Bush, Jr. and George Lawrence Bush.
Funeral services will be held at 2:00 PM on Tuesday, July 19, 2016 in the Johnson Funeral Home Chapel. The Rev. Thomas Bruce will officiate. Burial will follow in Prien Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will begin on Monday from 4:00 PM until 9:00 PM and will continue on Tuesday from 8:00 AM until the start of the service.
The family wishes to extend a special thank you to Mrs. Pennison’s great neighbors, Paula and Mike, Karen and Richard, Angie, and The Millers; Christus Home Care Hospice; Home Instead Senior Care/Eliza; and her caretakers, Gerry, Sue, Rita, Linde and Courtney, and Truman Carnahan for the care given to their mom and dad.
