Mary Calamusa Soileau

March 5, 1936 — November 19, 2015

Mary Soileau, 79, passed from this earth on Thursday, November 19, at Harbor Hospice in Lake Charles. She was born in New Orleans on March 5, 1936.
Preceded in death by her parents, Vincent and Emily Calamusa, she is survived by the love of her life and her husband of 60 years, Rudie Soileau; her son, Rudie Soileau, Jr. and his wife, Trena; many grandchildren - Jeffrey Soileau and his wife, Lorianne; Ryan Soileau and his wife Summer Xia; Isabella Soileau, and Sean, Tristan, and Mikaela Hager; and a great-grandson, Grady Soileau. She is also survived by two sisters, Estelle Martin and Diane Maloney of New Orleans; one brother, Vincent “Hershey” Calamusa of Baton Rouge, and several nieces and nephews, including Cher Walker and Joby Soileau, both of whom were very dear to Mary.
Mary overcame many physical challenges during her life, proudly saying she had "true grit.” Mary had a special love for books, most recently Jesus Calling. She loved to crochet and knit. But mostly she loved her family.
Mary also enjoyed music, and especially Willie Nelson who she and her husband, Rudie, once met at one of the many Willie Nelson concerts they attended together. Willie has said, "We are the same. There is no difference anywhere in the world. People are people. They laugh, cry, feel, and love, and music seems to be the common denominator that brings us all together. Music cuts through all boundaries and goes right to the soul." Mary would agree.
Visitation begins at 10:00 on Sunday, November 22, at Johnson Funeral Home in Lake Charles, with a brief memorial service beginning at 3:30 at the funeral home followed by burial at Consolata Cemetery in Lake Charles. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be offered to the McNeese Athletic Foundation.
