Mary Elizabeth Wells Hughes

November 23, 1935 — May 20, 2019

Mary Elizabeth Wells Hughes, 83, of Lake Charles, LA, died on Monday, May 20, 2019 at a local care facility.

Mary was born November 23, 1935 to Henry Fountain Wells, Sr., and Dora Isabell Williams Wells in Hannibal, Missouri, and recently moved to Lake Charles, LA. Mary loved helping people. She was the kind of person who couldn’t say no. She was very generous and always went over and above. Mary avoided the “limelight,” and she would always rather that someone else get the credit. She especially loved helping missionaries, making quilts and clothing when needed. Mary regularly volunteered for church activities and projects, and enjoyed sewing and crocheting.

Those left to cherish her memory are: her loving husband of 64 years, Harvey Hughes; children, Paula Chastain (Joseph) of Lake Charles, LA, Ronald Hughes of New Harmony, MO, Carol Shuler (Gary) of Ellerslie, GA, Gail Hughes of New Harmony, MO, Dale Hughes (Rosa) of Argentina, Robert Hughes (Amy) of Merced, CA; twenty grandchildren, and 38 great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; siblings, Henry F. Wells, Jr., and Dorothy McGuire; and one great granddaughter.

Funeral services will be held at 10:00 AM on Friday, May 24, 2019 at Bellview Baptist Church, 507 John Stine Rd, Westlake, LA, Reverend John Ward will officiate.
