Mary Evalen Moore Thoms

March 1, 1933 — June 18, 2021

Mary Evalen Moore Thoms was one of nine children born to Walter and Noemie Moore. She was born on March 1, 1933 in Woodworth, Louisiana.

At the age of two, she lost her mother during childbirth and growing up during The Great Depression set the tone of her life. Through all the adversity, she overcame and flourished into the pillar of strength and support her family loved and admired her for.

In 1949, at the age of 16 she exchanged vows with Dewey Thoms and together they welcomed four children. As a mother, she led her family by faith, exhibiting what it was to live as a Christian. She worked hard to provide her family with everything she did not have growing up. Her language of love was a nourishing meal, no one ever left hungry. Her hands were always extended outwards, not for asking, but giving. She and Dewey lived and traveled many places, but at each new homestead she found a church for worship and a way to provide outreach to those in need. She was an active member of many food pantries over the years, even establishing them where there was none.

“Ma” as her grandchildren and great grandchildren knew her by, learned by her example; at sixty, she enrolled along side her daughter into the Sowela Nursing Program, earning her LPN license and specializing in geriatric care until the age of 85.

Spending time with her family brought the most joy to her life, if she was not with family, you would find her sewing, or quilting, working in her garden, or enjoying the various “Quiz” TV shows. She loved music, especially Southern Gospel, often singing in her church’s music ministry.

She was welcomed into Heaven on June 18, 2021 by her husband of sixty-two years, Dewey Thoms Sr.; a daughter, Cresentia Thoms Lasyone; her parents; and siblings, Henry Moore, Doristine Strange, Edwin Moore, Guyma McIntyre, Walter “Rass” Moore, Lois Moore, HP “Sam” Moore.

Those left to cherish her memory: her children, Dewey (Sharon) Thoms Jr., David (Christy) Thoms, Cecilia (Warren) Manuel; grandchildren, John Lasyone, Rebecca (Jason) Nunez, Sarah Lasyone, Tabitha Lasyone, Jennifer (Scott) Morgan, Rebecca (Christopher) Muth, Karen (Devin) Zito, Mary Beth Thoms, Laura (Bart) Eskind, Christina (Matt) O’Brien, Dewey J. (Alejandra) Thoms III, Jessica Thoms, Joshua Thoms, Benjamin Thoms, Angela (Eric) Camel, Jeremy (Jennifer) Manuel Alaina (Ryan) Trahan; thirty two great grandchildren; five great great grandchildren; a brother, Shirley Davidson.

The family will welcome friends at Johnson Funeral Home of Moss Bluff on Wednesday, June 23, 2021 beginning at 4pm to 8pm. Visitation will resume Thursday June 24, 2021 at 8:30am, with a funeral service led by Pastor Hardesty to begin at 9am. She will be laid to rest at Westlake Memorial Park.

In honor of Mary’s giving nature, the family invites you to make a donation to a local food pantry or organization of your choice.
