Mary Grissom

Mary Anne Grissom was born on October 29, 1929 in Lake Charles, LA to Simeon and Victoria Ogea.

She attended LaGrange High School, graduating class of 1947. She went on to attend McNeese Jr. College, Class of 1949, then earning a teaching degree from Southwestern Institute (currently U.L.L.), class of 1951.

She began her teaching career in Bell City, then as she and Robert were relocated during his military service, she taught all over the country. Upon Robert being honorably discharged, they returned to Lake Charles, where she taught for over thirty one years at SJ Welsh and FK White.

She was a devote member of Our Lady Queen of Heaven Catholic Church, where she served with the Catholic Daughters. She took several trips to Medjugorje, Yugoslavia and Guadalupe to witness where Mary was seen. Over the years, she has created many beautiful Rosary’s, donating all of them to the church.

In her down time she enjoyed playing Bingo, macrame, crocheting, jigsaw puzzles, and Sudoku.

She was welcomed into Heaven by: her husband, Robert J. Grissom; a daughter, Mary Denise Nealy; a grandson Terry Grissom; her parents, Simeon and Victoria Ogea; a brother Richard Ogea.

Those left to cherish her memory: her children, Rev. Joel R. Grissom, Madeline H. Birdsong, Guy T. (Linda) Grissom, Andree L. Grissom, Chad H. Grissom; many grandchildren and great grandchildren; siblings, Betty Moore, Jimmy Ogea, Helen Hedrich, Ester “Squeaky” Doucet, Alice Sonnier, Tommy Ogea; an aunt Natalie Coulon.

For the healthy and safety of friends and family, face masks are required for visitation and funeral services.

The family will welcome friends Thursday, October 14, 2021 at University Baptist Church beginning at 4pm to 8pm, a Rosary to be prayed beginning at 6pm. Visitation will resume Friday at University Baptist Church at 9:30am to 11am. A Mass of Christian Burial led by Father Levi Thompson will begin at 11:30 at Our Lady Queen of Heaven Catholic Church. She will be laid to rest next to her beloved husband at Sallier Cemetery.
