Mary Johnson

March 17, 1938 — September 19, 2024

Mary Ann Gertson Johnson was born on Mar 17,1938 to Fred Chris Gertson and Annie Belle Wills in Wharton, Texas. She is preceded in death by her beloved husband, Lawrence Jackson Johnson, and her parents, Fred Chris Gertson and Annie Belle Wills Gertson Joehlin. She was the 6th of their 8 children. She is also preceded in death by all 7 of her siblings: Alice Mae Barret, Fred Junior Gertson, Emerson Donald Gertson, Evelyn Grace Gertson, Norman Dale Gertson, Judy Mann, and Francis Chris Gertson.

For most of her life she was a housewife and a mother. She considered being a mother her greatest accomplishment. Her daughters would agree that she gave them one of the greatest gifts they've ever received: their love for each other. Out of necessity she found a passion for upholstery work and began a home business in which she did work for individuals and even several health studios in the Houston area. She had a life-long dream of being an interior decorator. Which she practiced constantly in her own home. Dad said he had to turn on the light before walking into any room because he never knew where the furniture would be. She is still talked about by old Mayfair Park neighbors about how she took out the 2 doors in the dining room and made it only one-doing all the sheetrock work herself.

In later years, she is best known in Sulphur for being the receptionist at her daughter's business for several years. She was known affectionately by all as MeMaw.

She was an avid collector of glass wear and wall décor.

Her last occupation was as the "boss" at Holly Hill Nursing and Rehabilitation Center where she passed with family beside her on September 19, 2024. She leaves behind many friends there and her family is very grateful for the loving care she received.

She leaves behind to cherish her memory her children: Jack Alan Johnson, Vicki Lynn Renfroe (Larry), and Anna Marie Bruner (Gary). Also, mourning her are a number of nieces and nephews who felt like she a refuge for them.

Her son Robert Chris Johnson was there to greet her with open arms as she passed to eternal peace.

She also leaves behind 12 grandchildren, 29 great-grandchildren and her beloved puppy, Tripp.

A funeral service for Mary Ann will be held at 2 PM on Friday September 27, 2024, at Johnson Funeral Home of Sulphur. The family will receive friends at 11 AM on Friday at Johnson Funeral Home of Sulphur until the time for the service.
