Mary "Ruth" Shelton

Mary Ruth Sonnier Shelton, 88, of Lake Charles, LA, passed away at 4:54 AM on Tuesday, March 28, 2023 in her residence.

Mrs. Shelton was born February 22, 1935 in Lake Charles, LA, where she was a lifelong resident.  She graduated from Washington High School and was a longtime member of St. Martin de Porres Catholic Church.  During her younger years, she was active as a Cub Scout mother and often fixed uniforms for the scouts.  She enjoyed doing anything and everything with her hands, from quilting to sewing and painting, was an excellent cook and she loved to spend time with her family, especially her grandchildren.

Mrs. Shelton is survived by her sons, Byron Keith Shelton of Iowa and Russell Scott Shelton of Lake Charles; daughter of the heart, Dorothy Jean Chavis; sister, Rose Luckett of Los Angeles; and grandchildren, Brandon Duhon, Grayson Shelton, and Miles Arthur Shelton.

She was preceded in death by her husband of fifty years, William Arthur Shelton; parents, Minor and Octavia Sonnier; brother, Iver Lee Sonnier; and sister, Irma Sonnier.

Her funeral service will be held at 11:00 AM on Tuesday, April 4, 2023 at Johnson Funeral Home in Lake Charles.  Monsignor Jace Eskind will officiate.  Burial will follow in Consolata Cemetery.  Visitation will be at the funeral home on Tuesday from 10:00 AM until the start of the service.
