Mary Vernest Abshire Dennis, age 85, of Lake Charles was born January 16, 1933, and passed away Tuesday, September 18, 2018 in a local hospital.
Mrs. Dennis was born in and lived most of her life in Sulphur, then Moss Bluff and recently in Lake Charles. Mrs. Dennis enjoyed traveling extensively, including trips to South Korea, New Zealand, England and Scotland and just about all of the fifty states. She was also enjoyed photography, and was very talented with landscapes and wildlife, with what could have been post card portraits. Mrs. Dennis’s greatest love was her family, as a devoted wife, mother and grandmother she instilled her love for the Lord and the power of prayer. She was a member of Lakewood Bible Fellowship in Lake Charles, serving most recently on their prayer ministry. She and her husband served through the SOWERS organization for many years, traveling and working and making many lifelong friends. Mrs. Dennis will be most remembered as a prayer warrior for her family and friends.
She leaves to cherish her memory, three children, David Wayne Dugas and wife, Kyungae Lee (Ada) of Austin, TX, Evelyn Kay Dugas Paret and husband George of Lake Charles and Harold E. Dugas, Jr. of Sulphur; four grandchildren, Dana Eubanks and husband Mark, George Lock Paret, IV and wife Lexi, Lacey Dugas Dommert and Yu-jeong Lee (Ada). Her great-grandchildren are, Matthew, Madison, Ellie Kay, Taylyn, Kenzlie and Hadley. She also leaves one sister, Jean Abshire Richard of Sulphur.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Elmer and Nomia Fontenot Abshire; nine brothers and sisters and husband, Maurice E. Dennis, Sr.
Funeral services will be at 2:00 PM Saturday, September 22, 2018 in the Johnson Funeral Home Chapel. Reverend Jonathan Brown will officiate. Visitation Saturday will be from 11:00 AM until the time of service in the funeral home.
The family of Mrs. Dennis would like to express special thanks to her faithful sitter and friend, Bernita Garland with Evangeline Home Health Care, as well as, the amazing, doctors, nurses and staff of Unit 31 of Christus St. Patrick’s Hospital.
