Mayona Steed

Mayona Paula Steed was one of two children born to Thad and Nellie Fontenot. She was born January 28, 1936 in Kinder, LA.

She attended Kinder High School, then began working at a dry cleaners in Lake Charles. It was here she would meet Rodney Steed, a young serviceman from Portland, Oregon stationed at Chennault Air Force Base

Together they welcomed four children, and she was a proud and dutiful housewife and mother. The military life was definitely for her; she loved to be on the go! During his service they explored many of our nation’s states and also Japan, Germany, and Bangkok, Thailand. Driving across the Alps, camping, or exploring was something she never turned down. If she was going, so was her family.

She was overjoyed to become a grandmother, welcoming her grandchildren with open arms. They kept her going to every ball game, school event, or family holiday. Christmas was her favorite time of year, but she played Christmas music year-round.

She was welcomed into Heaven on Friday, April 22, 2022 by her husband of sixty-four years; a granddaughter, Heather Fossett; sister, Mary Ann Lormand; parents Thad and Nellie Fontenot; and a son in-law, Ron Krull.

Those left to cherish her memory are her beloved children: Deb Krull, Pam (Ron) Fossett, Rod Steed Jr., Karen (Kurt) Unkel; grandchildren, Brian Young, Stina LeBlanc, Travis Fossett, Chrissie Gubancsik, Jesse Unkel, Seth Unkel, and Lindsay Coleman; and ten great grandchildren.

The family will welcome friends Monday, April 25, 2022 at Johnson Funeral Home from 4pm to 8pm. Visitation will resume Tuesday, April 26, 2022 at 9am. Funeral Services led by Reverend Terry Bushnell to begin at 10am with burial to follow at Green Oak Cemetery in Kinder, LA.
