Melvin Charles Dupin

Melvin Charles "Hots" Dupin, 84, of Lake Charles died Wednesday, October 20, 2010 in the comfort of his home.


Mr. Dupin served the United States Army during World War II, was 2nd Lieutenant of the Army National Guard, a member of the VFW Post 2130 and American Legion Post 1. When returning home he worked as Street Commissioner. He continued to serve as a Deputy with the Calcasieu Parish Sheriff's Department for forty years before retiring. Twenty five of those years were as Director of the Youth Division, having been very active in the Junior Deputy and Youth Baseball Program. He was also an essential part in forming the first S.W.A.T. team for the CPSO. During his career, Mr. Dupin served under Ham Reid and Wayne McElveen and was the honored recipient of countless awards. He coached in Little League, Babe Ruth, and American Legion baseball programs for many years. For fun, Mr. Dupin enjoyed fishing, hunting, golfing, loved cooking, duplicating restaurant dishes and cooking with Justin Wilson.


Mr. Dupin will be most remembered as a fearless leader with an overwhelming willingness to help anyone at a moments notice.


He leaves to honor his memory, his wife of twenty years, Vickie Miller Dupin of Lake Charles; one son, Greg Dupin and wife Holley of Deer Park, TX; two daughters, Lauren Varnado and husband Paul of Pearland, TX and Jan Riche' and husband Paul of Baton Rouge; nine grandchildren; nine great- grandchildren; two step- sons, Drew Hoffpauir and wife Kathryn of Lake Charles and Dohn Hoffpauir of Lake Charles; one step- daughter, Hope McElveen of Lake Charles; twelve step- grandchildren; one sister Geneva Haymark of Lafayette and numerous nieces, nephews and friends.


Mr. Dupin was very well known throughout many communities in Louisiana and Texas and will be greatly missed by the many lives he influenced.


He was preceded in death by his parents Homer "Hots" Dupin, Olive Bonvillian Dupin; sister Loraine Montie, brother in law Jack Haymark; niece, Cheryl Haymark Moore and step- son, Byron Hoffpauir.


Mr. Dupin's family will honor his wishes of Anatomical Donation, as he continues to contribute to the education of young people.


Memorial services will be at 6:00 PM Monday, October 25, 2010 in the Johnson Funeral Home Chapel. Reverend Robert Stith will officiate. Gathering of friends Monday will begin at 4:00 PM until the time of service.
