Mervyn Lee Taylor

Mervyn Lee Taylor, 96, of Grand Lake passed away on Tuesday, August 8, 2017 in the Southwest Louisiana Veterans Home in Jennings with his wife of 71 years, Lerdie Taylor, at his side.

 

Mr. Taylor was born on May 18, 1921 in Lacassine to Thomas and Una Taylor. He lived most of his life in the Sweet Lake community. He attended McNeese Junior College and then the Southwest Louisiana Institute in Lafayette where he completed his studies just prior to joining the United States Army Air Corp in 1942, serving as a P-38 Fighter Pilot in WWII in the South Pacific Theater. After the war, he married Lerdie Pelly Taylor on May 24, 1946. Mr. Taylor was a rice and cattle farmer most of his life, along with many other occupations including 26 years as an insurance agent for Farm Bureau Insurance Company, 22 years as a School Board Member in Cameron Parish, operating a poultry farm for 20 years, and owning a grocery store.

 

Those left to cherish his memory are his wife, Lerdie Taylor; one daughter, Sherrill Ann LaVergne (Alan); one son, Terrel Lynn Taylor (Dale); one daughter-in-law, Rhonda Prejean Taylor; 6 grandchildren, Michael LaVergne, Melissa LaVergne Poole (Scotty), Rusty Taylor, Sara Taylor Cazenave (Ross), Todd Taylor (Ashley), and Amber Taylor Donovan (Shawn); and 6 great grandchildren, Stephen and Emily Poole, Joshua and Hannah Taylor, and Miles and Nate Cazenave.

 

Mr. Taylor was preceded in death by his parents; one sister, Minnie Taylor Smith; and one son, Ricky Lee Taylor.

 

Funeral services will be held at 10:00 AM on Friday, August 11, 2017 in the Johnson Funeral Home Chapel. The Rev. Scotty Poole will officiate. Burial will follow in Highland Memory Garden Cemetery. Visitation will begin on Thursday from 5:00 PM until 9:00 PM and will continue on Friday from 8:00 AM until the start of the service.
