Michael Lyons died Tuesday, May 14, 2013 in a local care facility.
Mike was born on March 30, 1928 in Vinton, LA to Mike and Mattie Lyons. After graduating from Vinton High School in May 1945, Mike worked in a local shipyard until enlisting in the Marine Corps in September 1945. He spent 4 years in the Marine Corps, 2 years of which were spent in China. He attained the rank of Staff Sergeant. After returning home he enrolled at McNeese and earned a degree in Mathematics. He began working at Cit-Con in 1951. He transferred to PCD at Cities Service and returned to McNeese State and earned a second degree in Chemistry in 1963. He was a chemist at PCD until retiring in March, 1982, with 31 years of service. He then went to work in Saudi Arabia, for Aramco. After retiring from Aramco, Mike returned to Lake Charles. He was a long time parishioner of St. Margaret of Scotland.
He was active in Little League Baseball at MidCity in the mid to late 1960's. He also served as Equipment Manager for the League. He followed his sons in any and all pursuits that they undertook. In later years he followed his two grandchildren in their pursuits as well. He loved to work in the yard and kept busy helping his wife with her painting projects, building stands for her projects and finishing them for her. Mike was an avid reader his entire life.
He is preceded in death by his parents and sister, Sybil.
He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Eleanor Kaough Lyons, of Lake Charles; 2 sons, Steve Lyons and wife Sherry Cart Lyons of Lake Charles, and Jeff Lyons of San Francisco; 2 grandchildren, Scott and Elizabeth Lyons and Sarah Lyons of Lake Charles, and great-grandson, Wes Michael Lyons.
The Lyons family wishes to thank the management and staff at The Guardian for their excellent service and kind attitude throughout this time. The family also wishes to thank Brighton Bridge Hospice for their efforts, professionalism and kindness. They made Mike's stay so much better for him and his family.
Visitation will be Thursday, May 16, 2013 from 4PM to 9PM at Johnson Funeral home with a 6PM Rosary. Visitation will resume Friday from 8AM until service time. Services will be at Johnson Funeral Home at 10 AM Friday, May 17, 2013. Monsignor Jace Eskind will officiate services. Burial will be at Consolata Cemetery.
