Michael Wayne “Mike” Reed, 76, was called to his Heavenly home on Tuesday, June 22, 2021, following a courageous battle with cancer.
Born to William “Billy” Reed and Martha Ready Reed in Brookhaven, Mississippi, Mike was a 1963 graduate of Brookhaven High School. He served his country in the United States Army Reserves and worked for W. R. Grace for forty years, retiring as an operator. While at Grace, Mike helped organize and served on the Steering Committee of the Voluntary Protection Program, a safety program at the plant. He was an avid sports and football fan, coaching and refereeing in many local games, and was a member of the Southwest Louisiana Football Official Association. Mike was a faithful member of First Baptist Church of Lake Charles for more than fifty years. He was a gentle man who loved and cared for his family with strength and faith; his kindness, warmth and embracing sense of humor touched the lives of many. One of his greatest joys was seeing his beloved granddaughter achieve the level of 2nd Degree Black Belt in Tae Kwon Do.
Those left to mourn his loss and cherish his memory are his loving wife of fifty-two years, Betty Cullumber Reed; one daughter, Kelli Reed; one granddaughter, Kayleigh Fontenot, and her husband Tanner, all of Lake Charles; one brother, Monty Reed and wife Diane of Lafayette; and many wonderful cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents and one niece, Becky Reed.
A memorial service will be held at 6 p.m. on Monday, August 2, 2021, at University Baptist Church under the direction of Johnson Funeral Home. Dr. Johnny Dammon will officiate. Visitation will be at the church from 4 p.m. until service time. Mike lovingly donated his body to the Genesis Legacy Foundation, in Tennessee, for medical research.
The family would like to express their grateful appreciation for the compassionate care given to Mike to the doctors and staff at Harbor Hospice, CalCam Hospital, and Complete Palliative Hospice Care in Tulsa, Oklahoma. They would also like to thank Johnson Funeral Home.
Words of comfort to the family may be expressed at www.johnsonfuneralhome.net.
