Nathan Adam Cormie, Sr., 87, of Lake Charles passed away Thursday, August 15, 2013 in the comfort of his home.
Mr. Cormie was born in Maxie, LA, raised in Houston, TX and has lived most of his life in Lake Charles. He was a veteran of World War II, having served the United States Marine Corps in combat in the South Pacific. He was a champion boxer in high school and the Marine Corps. He was a graduate of LaGrange High School, attended undergraduate at McNeese State University and attained a Bachelor of Science Degree in Business Administration, L.L.B. and Doctorate of Law at Louisiana State University. His Law career spanned sixty-two years. An Attorney with his firm, Nathan A. Cormie and Associates, he was recognized by his peers as an accomplished trial attorney, his practice was focused in areas of personal injury and domestic law. Mr. Cormie served two terms as representative from the Seventh Congressional District to the Junior Bar Council of the Louisiana Bar Association and served as elected member to the Board of Governors of the Louisiana State Bar Association. He held membership in the Greater Lake Charles Chamber of Commerce and of the Public Affairs Research Council of Louisiana. He was a member of the Louisiana Trial Attorneys, as well as a member of the Southwest Louisiana and American Trial Lawyers Association.
Mr. Cormie was farmer, cattleman and land investor, and held membership in the Louisiana Farm Bureau, Louisiana Cattlemen's Association, Calcasieu Cattlemen's Association, American Rice Grower's Association and American Quarter horse Association. He introduced commercial catfish farming to Southwest Louisiana in 1966, and is a charter member of Catfish Farmers of America. He established the first commercial catfish farm at Twelve Oaks Plantation, which was situated on 250 acres east of Lake Charles. Mr. Cormie served twenty years on the Board of Directors of Catfish Farmers of America. He was elected National President of Catfish Farmers of America and President of the Louisiana Catfish Farmers Association, having been the founding president. He also founded PawPaw's Seafood Steakhouse Restaurant, the then largest prominent seating restaurant in Lake Charles, which he and his family operated for twenty-six years.
Mr. Cormie was an avid duck and goose hunter, a sport which his father introduced to him at the age of 10, he continued well into his 80's.
He leaves to honor his memory his loving wife, Gail Noel Cormie of Lake Charles; two sons, Mark Shannon Cormie and wife Lisa of Lake Charles and Nathan Adam Cormie, Jr. of Breaux Bridge; four grandchildren, Ashley Cormie Granger, Lindsey Cormie Cotton, Tiffany Cormie and Dylan Cormie; one great-grandchild, Lyzah; one brother, Mural R. Cormie and wife Camille of Deridder; one sister, Dorothy Cormie Roach of Lake Charles; step-children, Dana Schexnayder Bodin of Lake Charles; Bridgette Schexnayder Cassell and husband Doug of Tulsa, OK, Shane Cannon Manuel and wife Anna of Lake Charles and Heather Daun Babineaux and husband Shannon of Lake Charles; nine step-grandchildren, Larry Soileau, Lakyn Hebert, Adrienne Bodin, Zachariah Hebert, Janett Cassell, Logan Bodin, Samantha Cassell, Matthew Cassell, Susan Babineaux; numerous nieces and nephews and many dear friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Joseph Adam and Sara Belle Welch Cormie and a brother, Nolan D. Cormie, Sr.
Funeral services will be at 1:00 PM Saturday, August 17, 2013 in the Johnson Funeral Home Chapel. Pastors Greg Simien and Bobby Leger will officiate. Interment will follow in Consolata Cemetery. Visitation Saturday will be from 9:00 AM until the time of service in the funeral home.
Pallbearers for service will be Barry Roach, Dylan Cormie, Henry Gatewood, Zach Hebert, Larry Roach, Jr., Harold Thibodeaux and Honorable Judge Robert Wyatt. Honorary pallbearers will be Honorable Judge Guy Bradberry, Honorable Judge Billy Ezell, Honorable Judge Fred Godwin, Rick Laughlin and Robbie Morgan.
