Nellie Stoma Maxey

Nellie Stoma Maxey, 96, of Lake Charles died on Thursday, January 19, 2012 in Lafayette at her daughter's residence after a brief illnesss.


Mrs. Maxey was born in Mansfield, LA on November 26, 1915 to Habib Ramus and Katoun Stoma of Daher Safra, Syria. She lived in Lake Charles for 66 years. In her earlier years she and her husband managed Joseph's Drive-Inn then went on to manage S M Bargain Store for 40 years. Mrs. Maxey was a member of St. Margaret Catholic Church.


Those left to cherish her memory are a daughter, Helen Dominique of Lafayette; a son-in-law, L.J. "Bud" Viator and a brother, Joseph Stoma and wife Janet all of Lake Charles; seven grandchildren, Lesa Hever and husband Tom of Dallas, TX, Rebecca Peyton and husband Rusty, Michael Dominique, and John Dominique and wife Mary all of Lafayette; Anna Catherine Viator and Jol Redd and husband Matt all of Lake Charles, and Amanda Viator-Carmosino and husband Gordon of Scottsdale, AZ; thirteen great grandchildren, Thomas, Michael, and Dominique Hever of Dallas, TX, William, Christopher, and Anne Elizabeth Peyton, Michael Paul, Isabelle, and Eve Dominique, and Paul, Hayden, and Evan Dominique all of Lafayette; and Rachel Redd of Lake Charles.


She was preceded in death by her husband, O.C. Maxey; a daughter, Mary Ann Viator; a son-in-law, Paul Dominique; four brothers, Tom, Emmet, George, and Fred Stoma; and four sisters, Minnie Mahfouz, Helen Rome, Mary McNess, and Eva Menga.


A funeral Mass will be held at 12:00 PM on Monday, January 23, 2012 at St. Margaret Catholic Church. Monsignor Harry Greig and Monsignor Jace Eskind will officiate. Burial will be in Graceland Cemetery under the direction of Johnson Funeral Home.


The family wishes to express their sincere gratitude to care giver and special friend of 40 years, Mary Ceasar. Also a special thanks to Carole Benoit, Lucy Gallow, Harriet Mosley, Mary Rideaux, and Becky Sinegal and also to the Cardiac Unit at Christus St. Patrick Hospital and Hospice of Acadiana.
