Nelvia Jean George

December 28, 1931 — February 20, 2022

Nelvia Jean Horton George, 90, of Lake Charles passed away Sunday, February 20, 2022 in a local healthcare facility.

Mrs. George was a lifelong resident of Lake Charles, born December 28, 1931. She was a graduate of LaGrange Senior High School where she was a member of the choir and continued her love of singing as a member of her church choir. Nelvia Jean loved flowers and gardening, shopping, cooking and baking everyone’s favorite sweets, her specialty being, rice and gravy and chocolate cake with whipped cream icing. Her “Monday cleanings were a must!.” She was a lady of grace, always beautifully put together, well-dressed and jeweled from head to toe. She loved to dance and was always ready for a night out on the town. Her greatest attribute were her family values and the importance she found in raising a family of unity. It was very important to her to attend her children’s activities. She took great pride in doing the same for her grandchildren. The George home was always welcoming, with an open door to family and friends, for holidays, birthdays, graduation parties and countless “just because” gatherings. Nelvia Jean will be most remembered for her love and devotion to her faith and family.

She leaves to cherish her memory, one son, Paul George and Theresa; two daughters, Lindy Ellen George and companion, Robert Schreve and Brenda George Polito and Joey, all of Lake Charles. Seven grandsons, Christopher Parsley and his children, Gabbie, Emily and Zach, Matthew George and Caitlin and their children, Ben, Eleanor and Dawson, Stephen George, Nicholas George and Whitney and their son, Noah, William George, Joseph Polito and Deveni and their daughter, Gia, Michael Polito; her only granddaughter, Jordan Polito and many beloved nieces and nephews.

She was preceded by her husband of fifty-eight years, William “Billy” George and parents, Herbert and Audrey DeGreene Horton and brother, Eric Jones.

Funeral services will be at 1:00 PM Wednesday, February 23, 2022 at The Episcopal Church of the Good Shepherd under the direction of Johnson Funeral Home.  The Rev. Dr. Mitzi George and Father Seth Donald will officiate.  Interment will follow in Highland Memory Gardens. Visitation Tuesday will be from 5:00 PM until 8:00 PM and Wednesday from 11:00 AM until 12:45 PM in Hardtner Hall of The Episcopal Church of the Good Shepherd.

Memorial donations may be made to The Episcopal Church of the Good Shepherd at 715 Kirkman Street, Lake Charles, LA 70601.
