Neva Tremie Young Veron was born on November 22, 1930, to Sidney and Marie Tremie. After graduating from Ville Platte High in 1947, she began her nursing career as a Nurse Aide at Ardoin Sanitarium. From 1948 -1950 she earned her LPN certificate in Ville Platte. After meeting and marrying Allen Young, they moved to Opelousas and then to Cameron, LA with their two young girls. In Cameron she worked Private Duty until June 25, 1957, when Hurricane Audrey struck. Their world changed.
She then began her second phase of nursing. St. Patrick Hospital became her new home. She started in 1957 as an LPN but by 1981 had earned her degree as an RN while raising two additional girls. She worked at St. Pat’s until she retired as head nurse in 1992. She retired after 35 yrs, but that was not the end of her nursing career.
For the next 7 years she was a classroom instructor for the LPN program at SOWELA Technical College. She then went on to teach students in the CNA program at Louisiana Community Medical College.
To say our mom loved her nursing career is an understatement. She could not give up her alcohol wipes, thermometers, and blood pressure monitors. Her last adventure was volunteering her nursing skills at the Calcasieu Community Center. Her love of nursing was evident in her everyday life. She enjoyed running into her former students and catching up with their lives. We girls were always amazed at how many lives our mother had touched through her nursing career.
Mom enjoyed visiting with her children, grandchildren, great grandchildren and great, great grandchild. She was a charter member of the ACTS group at Our Lady Queen of Heaven. She was a member of the Pioneer Club and enjoyed going to Bingo with her friends. She was also a member of Le Bon Temp, Tempo, and Merry Mates dance clubs. She enjoyed dancing her entire life and especially treasured dancing with her brother James.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Melvin “Allen” Young, and her second husband Louis Veron; her parents, Sidney and Marie (Soileau) Tremie; her sister Helen Tremie Manuel and her brother James Tremie.
Those left to cherish her memory are her four daughters: Peggy (Dennis) Cormier of Spring, TX; Jenny (Keith) Bertrand of Lafayette; Laura (Matt) Pitre of Beaumont, TX; and Catherine (Tony) Aguillard of Moss Bluff and one sister-in-law Elsie Tremie. Remembering her with love are her nine grandchildren: Ami Dixon, Brad Bertrand, Jeff Bertrand, Harley Hebert, Chase Aguillard, Logan Pitre, Allison Aguillard Bellue, Spencer Pitre, and Austin Aguillard, along with nine great grandchildren, one great great grandchild and numerous nieces and nephews.
