Nona Hughes Carpenter, 85, of Lake Charles, LA, died at 8:18 AM on Sunday, October 13, 2013 in a local care facility. Mrs. Carpenter was born August 5, 1928 in Ponchatoula, LA, was raised in Kentwood, LA and was a graduate of Spring Creek High School. She lived all of her adult life in Lake Charles. She was a faithful, life-long member of Boulevard Baptist Church. She enjoyed crocheting and raising indoor plants. Although she was a great cook, her true passion in life was for her family. She will always be remembered as a devoted wife, mother and grandmother and will be missed dearly. Mrs. Carpenter is survived by her daughters, Gloria Koogler of Houston, TX, Brenda Reeves and husband Cody of Moss Bluff, Judy Conley and husband Jim of Lake Charles, and Sandy Thompson and husband Bobby Jack of Lake Charles; thirteen grandchildren, John Koogler, Kinsye Weaver, Craig Koogler, Paige Nelson, Telise Winters, Matt Reeves, Jeffrey Conley, Sara Conley, Dr. James Barrow, Carl Barrow, Ryan Barrow, Jana Barrow and Bobbi Thompson. She was preceded in death by her husband of fifty-eight years, James Theodore Carpenter; parents, Charles and Daisy Hughes; brothers, Maple Hughes, Russell Hughes, and Aubrey Hughes; sister, Norma Cox; infant sister, Mary Elizabeth Hughes; and grandson, Samuel Thompson. Her funeral service will be on Wednesday, October 16, 2013 at 11:00 AM at the Johnson Funeral Home Chapel. Rev. Theron Watson will officiate. Burial will follow in Consolata Cemetery. Visitation will be at the funeral home on Tuesday from 5:00 PM to 8:00 PM and continue on Wednesday from 8:00 AM until the start of the service.
