Oneida Fay Barton, 78, died on Friday June 2, 2023, with her beloved husband of 54 years by her side.
She was born to Gertie Trahan Pevoto and O.E. Pevoto November 21, 1944, in Lake Charles but spent most of her life in Carlyss and Sulphur.
She graduated from Sulphur High in 1962 and McNeese State University in 1965. In high school she was involved with the Sulphur Rodeo Team.
She worked for Amoco Production until she retired in 1988. She was helpful to the secretaries of the men who worked in the oil industries. She was involved with their organization ‘Desk and Derrick.”
In 1973 she and her husband Wes became involved with Square Dancing, joining the Swinging Rebels Square Dance Club. For the next 50 years they square danced all over the United States. They scheduled their vacations to coincide with the National Square Dance Convention each year, which were held in different cities throughout the United States. They served on the boards of the Local, State and National Square Dance Organizations.
In her early life she was a member of St Theresa Catholic Church in Carlyss.
After she married in 1969, she became a member of Our Lady of LaSalette in Sulphur. Where she served as secretary of the Finance Council where she put her shorthand talents to use. She sang in the choir. She also served on the Parish Council. Founding member of “Come Lord Jesus” program. Member of The Legion of Mary for 40+ years. A church Lector and Eucharistic Minister. Cochairman of Our Lady of LaSalette Festivals. Involved with the church renovation completed in 2010. On the planning committee for “The Shrine” of Our Lady of LaSalette. A member of Lay Carmelites, and the Parish Secretary.
She was one of the founding members of Ward Six Fire Protection, Badge 301, She was an active member of the fire department from 1989 to 2011. She was the full-time Secretary for the District from 1989 to 1997. She was Captain for many years at Station 3. She was promoted to Assistant chief and served in that capacity for several years. She retired from the department in 2011 and moved to an honorary lifetime member position.
She loved to travel and in 2013 she went to her Seventh continent Antarctica.
She is survived by her husband of 54 years Johnie Wesley Barton; her sister, Barbara Elaine Heap; sister-in-law, Emma Lou May and husband Joe; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Preceded in death by her parents, Gertie Trahan Pevoto and O.E. Pevoto. Her sister Gertrude Robinson and brother-in-law Buddy Robinson.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be at 11AM, Tuesday, June 6, 2023, at Our Lady of LaSalette Catholic Church. A burial will follow at Mimosa Pines Cemetery South in Carlyss. Father Matthew Cormier will officiate. A visitation will be held at Johnson and Robison Funeral Home be 5pm – 8pm on Monday, June 5, 2023, with a recitation of the Rosary at 6pm and will resume Tuesday, 8 am until 10:30am at the funeral home.
